Description

Morgan Steel, LLC is seeking an experienced CNC Vertical Mill Operator with strong job-shop experience to join our machining team in Memphis, TN. This position is ideal for a machinist who thrives in a dynamic, non-repetitive environment where every day brings new parts, materials, and challenges. The CNC Operator will be responsible for setup, programming, and operation of CNC vertical mills to produce precision components in low to medium quantities, ensuring high-quality results across diverse materials and configurations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Setup and operate CNC vertical milling machines (Haas, Fanuc, or equivalent) for varied short-run and prototype projects.
  • Program using Fusion 360 and/or SolidWorks CAM to create toolpaths, post programs, and adjust for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Read, interpret, and apply complex blueprints, drawings, and GD&T specifications to produce components to tight tolerances.
  • Perform frequent setups and tear-downs—often multiple times per shift—adjusting tooling, offsets, and fixtures as jobs change.
  • Select proper tooling, feeds, and speeds based on material type (steel, stainless, aluminum, and specialty alloys).
  • Inspect parts using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges) to verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and make on-the-fly program or setup adjustments to maintain quality and production efficiency.
  • Work independently to manage multiple priorities and tight turnaround schedules in a job-shop environment.
  • Collaborate with engineers and Leads to refine setups.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of equipment and workspace while following safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of CNC milling experience in a custom job shop or contract machining environment.
  • Proficiency in Fusion 360 and/or SolidWorks for programming and modeling.
  • Strong knowledge of feeds, speeds, and cutting parameters across multiple metals and alloys.
  • Proven ability to perform rapid setups and frequent changeovers efficiently.
  • Ability to work from complex blueprints, sketches, and models with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and independence in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Familiarity with G-code editing, toolpath optimization, and fixture design preferred.
  • Commitment to quality, accuracy, and safety in all machining operations.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience operating Haas vertical mills or similar controls.
  • Knowledge of basic CAD/CAM modeling and fixture/jig design.
  • Ability to analyze machining processes for continuous improvement.
  • Strong time management and adaptability to shifting priorities
