Course Number and Title: EEB384H1S – Diversity of Amphibians and Reptiles

Course description: Lectures and laboratories examine the natural history, morphology, behaviour, ecology, evolutionary relationships, and biogeography of amphibians (frogs and toads, salamanders, caecilians) and non-avian reptiles (turtles, the tuatara, lizards, snakes, and crocodilians). Students are required to purchase a $25 lab manual.

 

Estimate of the course enrolment: 50 students

 

Number of Positions: 1

 

Estimated TA support: 140 hours (labs) plus 35 hours (grading)

 

Class schedule: Lectures – Thursdays 9:00am-11:00am; and Labs – Mondays 1:00pm-4:00pm

 

Sessional dates of appointment:  January 1, 2026 to April 30, 2026

 

Salary (0.5 FCE): $9,820.70 for Sessional Lecturer I ($10,510.04 for SLI Long Term); $10,510.04 for Sessional Lecturer II ($10,760.28 for SLII Long Term); $10,760.28 for Sessional Lecturer III ($11,030.36 for SLIII Long Term), inclusive of vacation pay

Minimum Qualifications: An academic background in ecology and evolutionary biology is required, specifically amphibians and non-avian reptiles and ability in teaching the course subject at a university level. A strong background in herpetology, ecology and/or evolutionary biology; PhD in biology; demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience teaching this or a similar university-level course.

 

Description of Duties: Preparation and delivery of all lectures and laboratory activities; supervision of teaching assistant assigned to course; available for office hours; preparation, supervision, and grading of assignments, tests and examinations, as appropriate, in accordance with University regulations as described in the Faculty of Arts & Science Academic Handbook.
