Director of Business Development and Marketing Job Details:

Snell & Wilmer, one of the largest law firms in the Western United States, is seeking a full-time Director of Business Development and Marketing to work from the firm’s Phoenix office.  Reporting to the firm’s Chief Marketing Officer,  you will lead the firm’s business development, marketing, and media/public relations efforts in Phoenix to support attorneys, practice groups, and the firm.  This role will set and execute a market-driven growth strategy, elevate the firm’s brand and reputation, drive measurable new business opportunities, and strengthen client relationships. The Director will play a visible leadership role in firmwide programs, including annual retreats, signature client events, and priority business development campaigns. The role will have particular responsibility for actively supporting named practice groups.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Strategic Leadership and Planning: The Director will develop and deliver an annual integrated marketing and business development plan for the Phoenix market aligned to the firm’s strategic priorities, revenue targets, and brand positioning. This includes defining market objectives; prioritizing high-potential industry sectors, practices, and client initiatives; setting KPIs; and establishing a disciplined operating cadence to review performance and adjust tactics.
  • Business Development and Client Growth: The Director will drive opportunity creation and conversion by originating and advancing pipelines in collaboration with attorneys and practice leaders. Responsibilities include managing strategic pursuits and RFPs from qualification through proposal and presentations; developing compelling, tailored credentials and capability materials; and supporting cross-selling, pricing strategy, and client feedback initiatives. The Director will strengthen attorney business development skills through one-on-one coaching, pursuit debriefs, and practical playbooks.
  • Marketing, Communications, and Brand: The Director will oversee market-level brand stewardship and visibility, ensuring consistent application of firm brand standards across all materials and channels. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining high-quality marketing collateral and attorney biographies, curating and amplifying thought leadership, managing digital and social presence for the Phoenix market, and deploying targeted campaigns that generate awareness and engagement among priority audiences.
  • Public Relations and Media Relations: The Director will lead proactive and reactive media strategies to enhance the firm’s reputation and profile, including news releases, media pitches, commentary opportunities, and monitoring of coverage. The Director will oversee legal alerts, client news, and “Taking Care of Business” announcements, and will coordinate with external PR partners as needed to secure meaningful placements. The role will also manage submissions for legal directories and rankings, including Chambers and national legal rankings, and develop attorney credentialing strategies encompassing leadership positions, programs, and speaking and writing opportunities.
  • Events and Market Presence: The Director will help design and support high-impact client events, community sponsorships, industry memberships, tickets, seminars/webinars, and promotional items. The Director will also help with event strategy and budget, content and format, attendee targeting and invitations, onsite execution, and post-event follow-up.
  • Team Leadership and Talent Development: The Director will lead, mentor, and develop marketing and business development professionals. The Director will model a collaborative, service-oriented culture; set clear goals and accountability; establish and optimize processes; and upskill team capabilities in analytics, client development, and project management.
  • Budgeting, Analytics, and Operations: The Director will forecast and manage Phoenix marketing and business development budgets; track and report on KPIs and ROI; and enhance data quality and adoption of technology platforms, including CRM, experience and matter databases, and analytics dashboards. The Director will ensure meticulous pipeline tracking and will leverage insights to refine targeting, messaging, and investment decisions.
  • Firmwide Collaboration and Special Projects: The Director will collaborate closely with the CMO and department leadership on firmwide initiatives, including annual retreats, cross-office campaigns, major client events, key growth priorities, and process improvement projects. The Director will ensure alignment with firm strategy and consistency in brand, messaging, and client experience across offices.

Experience and Qualifications: 

  • At least 10 years of Marketing/Business Development experience, including elevating teams in law or other professional services firms
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or other related field 
  • Ability to work well with others and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships internally and externally
  • Excellent verbal/written/interpersonal communication skills within a variety of settings
  • Ability to work well under pressure within a deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Zoom, social media platforms, and CRM management is needed
  • Ability to work extended and/or weekend hours, as required
  • Ability to travel, as required
