The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD is expanding our psychiatry team! The Psychiatrist, Forensics is responsible for conducting forensic psychiatric evaluations (Competency and Sanity) and expert testimony as designated by the criminal court system for defendants under the jurisdiction of Harris County criminal courts. Duties may include collaboration with individuals in the court as requested or other individuals designated by the criminal justice system and clinical supervision of designated staff/interns.

 

Your Role in Action:

  • Conducts competency and sanity evaluations.
  • Conducts testing and provide documentation of findings from assessment instruments, when 
    appropriate.
  • Complete written evaluation reports within required timeframe.
  • Provides court testimony relating to evaluation results as requested.
  • Effectively interacts with judges, attorneys and other court staff in the collection of information and 
    collaboration on assigned cases.
  • Ensures all services provided meet and/or complies with Agency policies and procedures, 
    accrediting/regulatory bodies, state and federal laws and performance contract requirements.
  • Communicates and works with consumers/visitors/other staff in a manner that demonstrates 
    sensitivity to cultural diversities.
  • Serves as a back-up to the on-site Forensic Psychiatrist Medical Education and Trainer.
  • Performs other related work as assigned. Adapts to changing work requirements.

What qualifications you will need:

Experience Required:

  • Graduation from Accredited Medical School and Psychiatric Residency Program 
  • Licensed to practice medicine in Texas. Exceptional Courses, Certificates and Licenses: Texas Medical 
    License.
  • Board Certified in Forensic Psychiatry.
  • Must have and maintain a controlled Substance Registration certificate from the U.S. Drug 
    Enforcement Administration.
  • Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) Registered

 

Required Knowledge, Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Title 1. Chapter 46B. requirements for Competency 
    and Sanity evaluations.
  • Strong diagnostic skills, the ability to incorporate patient history, symptoms, and environmental and 
    related issues to formulate proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
  • Strong communication skills, listening and interpersonal skills above average. 
  • Written documentation is clear, concise and well-constructed.
  • Effective time management and organization skills.
  • Able to execute standard word processing software on the computer.
