Heavy Equipment Mechanic:

Scope of work:

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains power
equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging
machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools. This worker operates
and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment, using
hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges,
replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to
ensure operating efficiency. The mechanic welds broken parts and structural members may coordinate
workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment.


Requirements:

Skill in using and interpreting results of a wide range of diagnostic and test equipment, i.e. engine
analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum and fuel pump testers, injector testers, ignition tuners, tachometers, ammeters, and ohmmeters.

Ability to use technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and similar
guides to make repairs and modifications

Familiarity with diagnostic equipment is preferable. A civilian driver's license is required.

Must be physically able to operate the unit's small forklift and become certified.

Working knowledge of the following computer software: Microsoft Office
Suite Unit Level Logistics System-Ground (ULLS-G) program Fed Log

ASC certification preferable

Ability to manually lift equipment and components weighing 20 to 60 pounds. Occasionally will
manually lift items weighing 75 pounds and with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices,
over 100 pounds.
