New York Common Pantry is one of the city’s largest hunger relief organizations, providing food assistance, case management services, senior food provision, nutrition education, and hygiene services. We are a dynamic, mission-driven organization experiencing rapid growth and expansion.
NYCP is a poverty-fighting organization that reduces hunger and promotes dignity, health, and self-sufficiency by using a holistic approach to reach over 122,000 distinct people -- over 729,000 visitors each year. Last year, we served over 11 million meals. Through an array of programs that we offer, we look to establish long-term stability for those we serve.
The Staff Accountant will be responsible for a variety of general accounting duties, including account reconciliation, account analysis, journal entries, petty cash management, and bank reconciliation. Additionally, this role will oversee the bi-weekly payroll process, which includes preparation and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.
The Staff Accountant will report to the Senior Accountant at the 8 East 109th, New York, NY 10029 location. The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday: 9 am - 5 pm; 1-hour lunch. This is a Full-Time position, 35 hours a week, non-exempt.
Responsibilities:
General Accounting:
Perform account reconciliations and ensure the accuracy of financial data.
Conduct account analysis to identify discrepancies and resolve issues.
Prepare and post journal entries accurately and timely.
Manage petty cash transactions and ensure proper documentation and reconciliation.
Perform bank reconciliations and resolve any discrepancies promptly.
Maintain a schedule of prepaid insurances, expenses, and fixed assets.
Participate in special projects as needed, providing accounting support and expertise.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Payroll Administration:
Prepare and process bi-weekly payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Maintain and update payroll records.
Respond to payroll-related inquiries from employees and resolve issues in a timely manner.
Ensure proper documentation and filing of payroll records.
Stay current with changes in payroll laws and regulations and implement necessary updates.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
A minimum of 3 years of experience in general accounting and payroll administration is required.

Full professional proficiency level in accounting software and payroll systems.
Strong knowledge of accounting principles and payroll regulations.
Professional analytical and problem-solving skills.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Professional written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient with Google Drive and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
Multi-task and work in a highly trafficked area.
Comfortable working with diverse populations.
