Job Summary
The Cultural Resource Supervisor is responsible for planning and conducting archaeological and architectural surveys to identify, record, evaluate and preserve sites and/or resources. The Cultural Resource Supervisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal preservation laws that protect archaeological and cultural sites under the National Historic Preservation Act, the Archeological Resources Protection Act, as well as the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The Cultural Resource Supervisor will be the lead trainer at the Dena'ina Cultural Center and supervises the operations and staff at the Dena'ina Cultural Center.
Essential Functions
- Provides training and mentoring to the Cultural Preservation Program staff pursuant to TERO Ordinance 2017-01
- Acts as a liaison between the Tribe and outside entities working with Kenaitze Indian Tribe on archaeological projects under the direction of the Tribal Programs Director
- Directs archaeological excavations as well as advising, assisting with, and/or conducting architectural investigations
- Participates as a field crew member, conducting inventories of cultural resources in areas of proposed projects
- Works as a team member to ensure archaeology work assignments are carried out in safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures
- Identifies and records cultural resource inventory material in the field for use in reports and site forms
- Assists in research of reference materials such as state and national register files, historic documents, archaeological reports, maps and aerial photos, and interviews source individuals concerning project areas
- Reviews cultural resource clearance requests, as well as conducting related educational and outreach functions
- Oversees the archiving of historical documents and artifacts
- Actively learns and teaches Dena'ina Language and Culture to all ages
- Organize language and cultural events that strengthen Tribal member access to Dena'ina culture and language
- Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications
Education
- Associate's Degree in Anthropology, Environmental Science, or related field, or a combination of education and experience may be substituted for a degree
Experience
- Two (2) years of experience working with Cultural Programs, Archaeological Projects and/or other Government Entities
- Working knowledge of NAGPRA, ARPA, National Historic Preservation Act and other Historic Preservation laws, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
- K-12 instruction experience
- Cultural knowledge and skills in areas like: tanning moose hide, beading, processing fish, and planning camps
Preferred
- Participation in the Kenaitze Susten Camp, K'beq' and/or other archaeological programs
- Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
License/Certification
- Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire
Special Skills
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
- Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others
