Means a division of Amsted Automotive in Sterling Heights, MI is seeking a Tooling Engineering Manager to lead our tooling team!
You’ll oversee daily Tool Room operations, manage tooling engineers, and guide stamping die projects from quoting through build and production. Support manufacturing goals by improving tool life, enhancing processes, and implementing equipment upgrades. Collaborate with program managers and plant personnel to ensure part quality, APQP compliance, and continuous improvement. Duties And Responsibilities:
- Work closely with all plant personnel to build and maintain a safety incident-free environment.
- Act, always, according to the Amsted Automotive Group Ideal Behaviors of Performance Driven, Passion for Innovation, Customer Focused, Energize People, Think Team! Live Team! and Uphold Trust & Integrity.
- Manage the site Tooling team including Tooling Engineer(s), Tool Room Supervisor, and, indirectly, the hourly Tool & Die Makers.
- Act with primary responsibility for the growth and development of the Tooling team.
- Support Program Managers for the quoting of potential new parts. This will include reviewing strip layouts and feasibility of part design for quoting for new stamping dies, developing dimensioning schemes to be able to use hard gaging.
- Support APQP and resolution to part-dimensional issues to meet customer quality standards. Utilizes part capability data to adjust dies to meet required part print dimensions. Support this by coordinating follow-up countermeasure activities for part dimensional issues following each stamping die trial.
- Support stamping die builds internal and external (die supplier) with status updates to Program Managers.
- Utilize subject matter expertise to ensure consistent and efficient mechanical press operation and controls, including leveling/flattening of incoming steel to the die, die sensor technology, and die sensor monitoring.
- Keep up to date and utilizes the latest technology for die simulation, FEA, CAD/CAM software and tooling manufacturing processes and equipment.
- Plan for the staffing of tooling engineering and tool room personnel based on forecast sales planning.
- Prepare Goals and Objectives (G&O) corrective actions for tooling related downtimes.
- Continuously improve tool life using new tool steels, heat treatment processes, coating technologies and die lubricants.
- Provide capital equipment upgrade recommendations to the tool room and tooling engineering areas.
- Support die tryouts for all customer requirements (Prototype, Samples, PPAP, etc.) and supports die change activities to meet part quality for the life of the stamping dies.
- Participate, support and attend APQP meetings to aid in the development of process flow diagram, control plan, PFMEA and other customer required documents.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Tooling Engineering preferred or a minimum of a two-year Technical Degree in Engineering with equivalent hands on experience with Stamping Dies.
Experience
- A minimum of five years of experience in Tooling, Stamping, and Manufacturing Processes is strongly preferred.
- Training and experience in the following engineering disciplines, such as, DCP, FMEA, DOE is strongly preferred.
- Experience with the automotive industry requirements for sample submission, such as: flow diagrams, control plans, SPC, and AIAG standards is strongly preferred.
Skills, Certifications, Abilities
- Good presentation and communication skills. Demonstrated excellent leadership skills also preferred.
- Excellent proficiency with essential software such as Microsoft Office 365.
- Possess strong commitment to team environment dynamics with the ability to contribute expertise and follow leadership directives at appropriate times.
