TITLE:          MECHANIC I

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School Diploma required, vocational/technical training program in automotive repair preferred.
2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.
3. Interest in learning motor vehicle repair, preferably with exposure to school bus systems.
4. Basic knowledge of mechanics and electronics preferred.
5. Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within a specified timeframe.

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Transportation

JOB GOAL:  To assist mechanics in performing preventive, general and emergency repairs to Transportation Department buses and vans while gaining hands-on training and experience in the trade.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

1. Assistant senior mechanic with preventive, general and emergency repairs to all Transportation Department vehicles, including buses, autos and vans.
2. Maintain a clear, orderly, and safe workplace under supervision.
3. Support in ordering, organizing, and maintaining inventory of parts and supplies.
4. Perform basic maintenance tasks and learn to service other equipment as assigned.
5. Participate in training and skill development to progress toward independent work.
6. Learn to properly use common hand tools, electrical tools, and specialty tools used in vehicle repair.
7. Observe and follow all safety regulations and procedures when using shop equipment, lifts, hoists, and chemicals.
8. Read and follow instructional manuals, MSDS chemical sheets, and complete written and verbal reports.
9. Assist with snow and ice removal, overtime, and on-call coverage as assigned
10. Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor and senior mechanic.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Non-exempt positions. 12 month work year.  Salary to 

be established by the Board.
