TITLE: MECHANIC I
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma required, vocational/technical training program in automotive repair preferred.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.
- Interest in learning motor vehicle repair, preferably with exposure to school bus systems.
- Basic knowledge of mechanics and electronics preferred.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within a specified timeframe.
REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Transportation
JOB GOAL: To assist mechanics in performing preventive, general and emergency repairs to Transportation Department buses and vans while gaining hands-on training and experience in the trade.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Assistant senior mechanic with preventive, general and emergency repairs to all Transportation Department vehicles, including buses, autos and vans.
- Maintain a clear, orderly, and safe workplace under supervision.
- Support in ordering, organizing, and maintaining inventory of parts and supplies.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks and learn to service other equipment as assigned.
- Participate in training and skill development to progress toward independent work.
- Learn to properly use common hand tools, electrical tools, and specialty tools used in vehicle repair.
- Observe and follow all safety regulations and procedures when using shop equipment, lifts, hoists, and chemicals.
- Read and follow instructional manuals, MSDS chemical sheets, and complete written and verbal reports.
- Assist with snow and ice removal, overtime, and on-call coverage as assigned
- Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor and senior mechanic.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Non-exempt positions. 12 month work year. Salary to
be established by the Board.
