Summary

The Grader is responsible for inspecting, measuring, and grading lumber to ensure quality and accuracy in beam lay-up production. This position requires attention to detail, adherence to all company safety regulations, and effective teamwork within the production department under the direction of the Production Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(Includes but is not limited to the following:)

• Visually inspect and grade each piece of lumber coming down the chain, checking all four sides for proper beam lay-up.
• Use tools such as a tape measure, size gauge, and moisture meter to verify correct dimensions and acceptable moisture levels.
• Operate production equipment, including the foot pedal for in-feed chains, rolls, and the finger jointer.
• Remain alert and attentive at all times during operations.
• Follow all Lockout/Tagout procedures associated with assigned duties.
• Immediately report any machinery defects or potential safety hazards to a supervisor.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Use downtime productively for cleanup and minor maintenance tasks.

Qualifications

(Includes but is not limited to the following:)

• Understanding of Finger Jointing machine fundamentals.

• Knowledge of beam lay-ups and grading standards.

• Ability to read and interpret calipers, moisture meters, and measuring tapes.

• Strong communication skills with coworkers and supervisors.

• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with limited supervision.

• Commitment to promoting and supporting a strong safety culture.

• Willingness to work overtime or fill in on alternate shifts as needed.

Education and Experience

• Previous grading and/or finger jointing experience preferred.

• Experience operating production machinery is beneficial.

Language and Math Skills

• Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations required for grading and measurement accuracy.
