The Lead Custodian is responsible for overseeing custodial operations across County facilities, ensuring that all high-traffic areas, public spaces, and work environments are kept clean, safe, and well-maintained. This position combines leadership, hands-on custodial work, and operational oversight to maintain high standards of cleanliness and service delivery. 

Position Duties

  • Lead and coordinate the work of custodial staff to ensure tasks are completed effectively and on schedule.
  • Perform hands-on custodial duties, when necessary, especially in difficult or high-traffic areas.
  • Inspect facilities regularly for cleanliness and adherence to standards.
  • Distribute and maintain custodial supply inventory, ensuring proper materials are available and used appropriately.
  • Oversee the proper use, care, and maintenance of custodial equipment such as industrial floor machines, carpet extractors, and buffing equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience:

High school diploma / GED supplemented by three years of commercial custodial experience, including operation of related equipment.  Strong understanding of cleaning methods, materials, and commercial custodial equipment. Knowledge and experience in Stripping and Waxing VCT floors highly recommended.  Equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered. 

Familiarity with environmentally friendly cleaning products and practices are preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Must obtain within 1 year of hire OSHA 30hr General Industry Safety Certification (No cost to employee)
  • Must obtain within 1 year of hire IJCSA Green Cleaning Certification (No Cost to employee)


Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, and equipment.


Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as backpack vacuum cleaners, auto scrubbers, and other cleaning equipment


Ability to perform tasks requiring physical strength and endurance, under adverse weather conditions including rain and excessively hot weather conditions during the summer months.


Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; follow both verbal and written instructions.


Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and deal tactfully and diplomatically with the public.


Ability to work 2nd shift hours. May also be required to work days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to special projects and / or emergencies. 


Ability to operate a computer and/or handheld electronic devices for the purpose of inventory tracking and reporting, clocking in/out, requesting time off, and accessing the employee self-service website.


Other Qualifications

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:


The position requires constant walking, standing, reaching above the shoulders, kneeling, bending, squatting, and the use of both hands and feet. Employees must frequently lift heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds and carry lighter items of 30 pounds or less. Good balance, eye-hand coordination, near and far vision, and hearing are essential. Work is performed both inside and outside of facilities, often necessitating standing, stooping, and bending. Employees are exposed to dust and cleaning chemicals, requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, and masks. Appropriate footwear with slip-resistant soles must be worn at all times. Additionally, this position requires travel regularly between all county-maintained facilities to inspect them for cleanliness and adherence to standards.

Must be able to pass a State Level II background check.
