Indian River County


This position performs duties in the maintenance of Indian River County’s facilities. Employees perform laboring tasks requiring the use of hand tools, power tools, and cleaning equipment. Employees are responsible for the upkeep and efficient operation of the tools or equipment used. Instructions are usually received verbally, and routine tasks are performed with considerable independence. All work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion.

Position Duties

  • Performs regular facility cleaning and sanitation tasks, including dusting, wiping, and disinfecting high-touch surfaces such as door handles, elevator buttons, light switches, tables, countertops, and chairs throughout the workday.
  • Responds to spills, restroom issues, and other urgent cleaning needs during operating hours to maintain a safe and professional environment.
  • Conducts exterior upkeep such as sweeping walkways, removing litter, and monitoring outdoor common areas for cleanliness and safety.
  • Provides support for departmental events or small staff gatherings by performing light cleanup (e.g., emptying trash, spot vacuuming, or resetting rooms).
  • Monitors facilities throughout the day to identify maintenance or safety concerns and promptly reports issues to management for resolution.
  • Maintains cleaning supplies, restocks amenities, and ensures custodial closets and work areas remain organized and fully equipped.
  • Operates cleaning and maintenance equipment as required to support day-to-day operations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required to support the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of County facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience:

High School Diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience in facility Janitorial services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:


  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.


Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:


Knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, and equipment.


Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as backpack vacuum cleaners, auto scrubbers, and other cleaning equipment


Ability to perform tasks requiring physical strength and endurance, under adverse weather conditions including rain and excessively hot weather conditions during the summer months.


Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; follow both verbal and written instructions.


Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and deal tactfully and diplomatically with the public.


Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays. May also be required to work days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to special projects and / or emergencies. 


Ability to operate a computer and/or handheld electronic devices for the purpose of clocking in/out, requesting time off, and accessing the employee self-service website.


Other Qualifications

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:


Work is performed primarily indoors but will have to walk between buildings in adverse weather conditions. May work around odors and fumes, exposure to hazardous chemicals, noise, and light conditions. Involves frequent interaction with people.
