The Associate Nurse Manager reports directly to the Nurse Manager and oversees daily operations of assigned shift ensuring proper care is provided to all patients. The Associate Nurse Manager is accountable to ensure high quality, safe and appropriate nursing care, competency of clinical and support staff, and appropriate resource and service management related to patient care on assigned shift. The Associate Nurse Manager must also ensure services and care are provided abiding by the policies and procedures of the organization, demonstrate fiscal responsibility and accountability. The Associate Nurse Manager plays a crucial role in assisting the Nurse Manager with strategic operations of the unit, conducting staff meetings, and all other responsibilities. The Associate Nurse Manager is knowledgeable of hospital policies and procedures, regulatory requirements, and patient care standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Reports directly to the Nurse Manager and oversees daily operations of assigned shift ensuring proper care is provided to all patients.

  • The Associate Nurse Manager is accountable to ensure high quality, safe and appropriate nursing care, competency of clinical and support staff, and appropriate resource and service management related to patient care on assigned shift.

  • Ensure services and care are provided abiding by the policies and procedures of the organization, demonstrate fiscal responsibility and accountability.

  • Plays a crucial role in assisting the Nurse Manager with strategic operations of the unit, conducting staff meetings, and all other responsibilities.

  • Contributes to retention of staff by providing supportive and mentoring relationships.

  • Knowledgeable of hospital policies and procedures, regulatory requirements and patient care standards.

  • Responsible for growth and development of employees and daily operation of assigned shift, including strategic succession plan.

  • Participates, identifies, and follows through with plan of action to develop staff.

  • Participates in and initiates the corrective action process when necessary and ensures that policies are fairly and consistently enforced.

  • Works to improve employee engagement through collaboration; holds staff accountable, meets one on one with staff, and frequently acknowledges team members for great performance.

  • Assists with facilitating education of employees such as clinical competencies for the unit staff, orientation of new staff, and mentoring current staff.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and clinical skills to oversee daily operations of the nursing unit and staff and assumes 24/7 responsibility in the absence of the nurse manager.

  • Assists the Nurse Manager in meeting the expectations of staffing requirements, nursing care and nursing documentation.

  • Reports issues or concerns immediately and appropriately by keeping leaders informed of occurrences or changes related to patient acuity or complexity of any incidents.

  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager and Program Director regarding formulating and implementing short and long term goals that align with organizational priorities, evidenced by partnering with case management and physicians ensuring completion of all consults and patient dispositions related to timely patient discharges according to established departmental policies.

  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with all providers, and acts as an effective resource for staff and other members of the healthcare team.

  • Works with leadership to identify, develop, and retain high potential employees by actively engaging them through stretch assignments, supervision and educational programs.

  • With leader oversight, evaluates the performance of direct reports focusing on results and developmental need and supports the organizations performance improvement program.

  • Collaborates with leaders, educators, and preceptors to recruit and orient new employees overseeing a comprehensive unit base orientation.

  • Analyzes healthcare trends through nursing literature and suggests changes and improvement in patient care standards.

  • Organizes data and problem solves with minimal supervision in a prompt, efficient manner.

  • Supports the ongoing improvement of quality and performance metrics for nursing including, but not limited to core measures, hospital acquired infections, safety initiatives and the patient experience.

  • Monitors and intervenes to maintain monthly budget by working with direct reports on developing and improving cost management strategies in order to meet or exceed financial targets.

  • Completes monthly schedules to ensure adequate staffing based on patient care, acuity, and workforce targets.

  • Reviews, and approves time cards and timely Kronos edits.

  • Manages staffing on a regular basis

  • Serves as a resource to prepare and maintain the unit to meet regulatory agency requirements.

  • Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list.

  • Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.

  • Supports professional nursing practice across practices settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family.

  • Functions within the nursing care model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.

  • Communicates patient care, departmental issues, and staff concerns to the appropriate leaders.

  • Serves as a resource for guidance and assistance to the staff.

  • Collaborates and supports the plan of care as established by the interdisciplinary team and prescribes interventions to attain the expected outcomes.

  • Performs consistent with Shepherd Center standards, clinical policies, and procedures.

  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues in the occurrence notification system.  

  • Actively participates in center-wide efforts that affect nursing practice.

  • Adheres to patient/family centered principles using the communication and engagement tools (OARS/AIDECT).

  • May participate on committees or projects.

  • Performs other duties as required/requested/assigned.

Required Minimum Education

  • BSN from an accredited school of nursing is preferred.

Required Minimum Certification

  • BLS required.

  • ACLS required within twelve months of start date.

  • Active Georgia RN license or NLC/eNLC Multistate License.

  • Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) certification required after appropriate time frame.

Required Minimum Experience

  • Generally, requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.

  • Must meet and maintain valid and current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines.

  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.

  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs

  • Must have clinical knowledge, skill and ability to fully and accurately complete all required unit competencies, as indicated in the unit competency checklist

  • Completes orientation and initial assessment of competency successfully by determined due date.

  • Completes mandatory education and annual competency assessment requirements by determined due date.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with patients with Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, and/or behavioral health preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Uses body, tools, or special devices to safely, effectively, and efficiently to move, guide, or place patients. Involves some latitude for judgement with regard to precision attained and the selection of what adaptive device(s) to utilize.

  • Ability to transfer and position patients, consistent with lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Job function requires frequent sitting, standing or walking for extended period of time.
