Additional Information: Show/Hide Position Summary: The Self-Contained Life Skills Special Education (QUEST) Building Substitute provides consistent, day-to-day support for students with significant disabilities within the life skills classroom. This position ensures continuity of student supervision, instruction, and care when paraprofessionals or teachers are absent. The building substitute is assigned to one school building and serves as a dedicated support to the life skills program, fostering student independence, safety, and engagement.
This position will generally work 7.5 hours per day with a 30 minute meal period.
Hourly rate is $17.23/hour.
Schedule is 182 days.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the implementation of individualized education programs (IEPs) under the direction of the special education teacher. •
Assist students with functional academics, communication, social, and daily living skills. •
Provide personal care assistance as needed, including feeding, toileting, and mobility support. •
Supervise students during classroom instruction, community-based activities, lunch, and transitions. •
Follow established behavior support plans and use approved strategies for de-escalation and redirection. •
Maintain a safe, structured, and positive learning environment. •
Communicate effectively and respectfully with students, staff, and families. •
Support classroom organization, preparation of instructional materials, and data collection as directed. •
Serve as a consistent, reliable presence within the building’s life skills program, available to assist in any classroom or student support need as assigned. •
Participate in ongoing training related to student safety, instructional support, and behavior management.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in education or human services preferred. •
Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities preferred. •
Ability to assist with lifting, positioning, and personal care tasks. •
Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills. •
Dependable, flexible, and able to respond calmly to challenging situations. •
Willingness to receive training in CPI, first aid, and other required certifications.
Work Environment:
School-based setting with frequent physical activity and direct student interaction. •
Flexibility in assignment as attendance can vary for both students and staff. •
May require lifting or assisting students with physical needs and use of adaptive equipment. •
Collaboration with teachers, therapists, and other support staff.
