Looking for a minimum of 1 year coding experience in ambulatory surgery and observation.
General Summary:
Under the direction of the Coding Supervisor and Manager, the Coder for Hospital Services is responsible for accurately coding outpatient conditions and procedures. The Coder reviews clinical documentation and diagnostic results in order to extract data for billing, internal and external reporting, and research, ensuring all codes are appropriately applied per the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. When applicable, the Coder is responsible for accurately and completely capturing charges for hospital services provided by reviewing clinical documentation. This data is utilized for revenue processing, internal and external reporting, research and regulatory compliance as documented in the CPT guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
High School Diploma/GED
RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, COC or other professional HIM coding certificate.
Member of AHIMA/AAPC in good standing (i.e., has paid dues and completed required continuing education.
Minimum one (1) year recent facility coding experience required
Coding software and basic computer software experience including Microsoft Office. Previous experience with computer assisted encoder.
Effective communication and listening skills.
Ability to contribute to team efforts.
Typing- 40 WPM or better
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Code all hospital-based diagnoses, treatments, and procedures by translating physician and nursing documentation according to the appropriate classification system for the category of patient encounter.
Maintain 95% coding accuracy. Maintain coding productivity within standards as established by record type.
Ensure supporting documentation is provided for all hospital services. Initiate coding query process as appropriate.
Enter and/or validate hospital department charges within the required timeframe to ensure accurate and timely data entry of the service codes, as appropriate.
Maintain continuing education credits for corporate compliance regulations and credential requirements.
Foster respect for patient privacy by maintaining confidentiality in all phases of the work.
Participate in departmental quality standards.
Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
