About the Department

  • Principal working relationships:  Chief Safety Officer, Public Safety Officers, Students, Faculty and Staff

Position Duties

  1. Patrol campus buildings including taking boiler readings, monitor traffic and parking lots, prepare accurate/timely incident and accident reports, and respond to emergency calls via cell phone, and or walkie-talkies. Alert appropriate staff or authorities in emergency safety or maintenance situations.
  2. Respond to emergency calls, participate in all emergency response protocols, and serve as communication link to emergency response personnel.
  3. Remain alert and sensitive to emergency call situations.  This requires an appropriate and immediate response to calls either coming in through emergency telephone system or directly through the switchboard.
  4. Actively monitor camera system at all Sandburg Campus locations.
  5. Maintain a thorough working knowledge of college’s emergency response protocols and how to operate emergency phone system, including internal/external call boxes, and operation of the emergency public address system.
  6. Escort students, faculty, staff, and campus guests on premise if requested.
  7. Provide detailed reports of events that occur on the work shift.
  8. Schedule/coordinate the use of the College’s fleet vehicles.
  9. Service school vans (i.e. fuel vehicles, record mileage etc.) and perform similar maintenance on security vehicles.
  10. Operate college switchboard in accordance with switchboard procedures as outlined in the procedure manual.
  11. Respond to phone communications from Public Safety supervision when   unexpected security needs arise.
  12. Public Safety Employees may be required to report to work during periods when the campus has been closed for business and/or classes. It should be understood, Public Safety Employees may be required to remain on duty, until properly relieved of such duties.
  1. Participates in ongoing training and professional development relevant to position responsibilities.
  2. Other duties as assigned.
Coordinate:
  1. Locking and unlocking of doors on a regular schedule and as needs arise.
Assist with:
  1. Shipping and receiving as needed.
  2. The movement of equipment and furniture as needed and the setup of the      facility for special function.
  3. Compliance with the Campus Security Act and other relevant local, state, and federal laws and statutes.
  4. Assist with the monitoring of external door security and fire alarm systems. Report system failures to the Director of Public Safety.
  5. Maintaining an effective key control program and the preparation of related management reports.
  6. Complying with Order of Protection decrees from state and local agencies.
  7. Participate in the assessment of public safety.
Risk-management and loss-prevention activities
  1. Maintain a working knowledge of the college’s emergency procedures and actively participate in the college risk-management program.
  2. Monitor conditions, events and circumstances that present risk to the college community. Intervene and/or report as specified in the college’s risk-management plan.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School diploma or GED required.
  2. Valid driver’s license.
  3. Two years security experience preferred.
  4. Working knowledge of computer systems and software to include word processing, and spreadsheets.
  5. Good communication skills, both in person and over the phone.
  6. The ability to communicate successfully with clients of all ages, socio-economic status, sex, or race.
  7. Spanish or French proficiency preferred.

  1. Capable of lifting 30 pounds and performs arduous work.
  1. Capable of continuous walking and climbing stairs throughout the campus.
  2. Subject to outside environmental conditions.
  3. Vision – with/without correction.
  4. Hearing – perceiving the nature of sound with/without correction.
  5. sitting for sustained periods of time.
