General Position Summary: Contribute to planning, forecasting, implementation, and identification of resource requirements for network backbone infrastructures (inclusive of wireless technologies). The scope of this position typically affects the delivery of campus backbone network resources for a large number of local and wide-area connected buildings.
Trouble-shoot, monitor and maintain network components and functionality on a school/campus/enterprise-wide level. Position provides consultation to IT users in designated business units for aspects of network connectivity functions, issues of increasing traffic, and determining the path between hosts across the network. Candidate communicates with end users about the scheduling and delivery of changes within the network topology and participates in the technical aspects of network changes and workflow.
Job Scope/Complexity: Position primarily focuses on entry level to moderately complex designs for data and voice communication systems throughout the Johns Hopkins enterprise. Job complexity includes design/engineering/installation of small to medium sized projects (multiple floors within a building to multiple buildings within a campus), troubleshooting routing and switching protocol issues, and interfacing with customers to understand needs. Typically, this job is focused on a primary Johns Hopkins campus; however, this position is expected to travel throughout Maryland/DC to cover any Johns Hopkins location as required.
Required Skills:
- Avaya CM Knowledge: Knowledge and experience with Avaya CM 8.0 and above, including call routing, device configuration, user management, and troubleshooting.
- SBC Knowledge: Knowledge and experience with Ribbon SBCs, including call routing, KPIs, Analytics, and alarm management.
- VoIP Protocols: Strong understanding of Voice over IP (VoIP) protocols such as SIP and H.323.
- Networking Fundamentals: Solid grasp of networking principles, including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and subnetting.
- Quality of Service (QoS): Proficiency in configuring and managing QoS policies to ensure voice and video traffic receives priority on the network.
- Security: Understanding of security best practices, including firewall rules, encryption, and securing VoIP infrastructure from threats.
- CM Administration: Ability to perform day-to-day administrative tasks in Avaya CM, including adding and managing users, devices, and dial plans using Avaya System Manager.
- Troubleshooting Skills: Proficient in identifying and resolving issues related to call quality, connectivity, and other CM-related problems.
- Cabling and Wiring: Knowledge and experience in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting network cabling, including Ethernet and structured cabling for phones.
- Server Equipment Handling: Proficiency in handling and maintaining server equipment, including rack-mount servers used for CM deployments.
- SSH and Network Tools: Proficient in using SSH for remote management of network devices and familiar with network diagnostic tools for troubleshooting.
- Microsoft Office Suite: Proficiency in using Microsoft Office tools, including Excel for data analysis, documentation, and reporting.
- Office 365 Tools: Familiarity with Office 365 applications and services, including email, collaboration tools, and cloud-based productivity applications.
- Microsoft Active Directory (AD): Understanding of Microsoft AD for user authentication, directory services, and integration with Avaya CM.
- File Management: Ability to manage and organize files and data efficiently, including configuration backups and documentation.
Preferred Skills:
- Avaya: Avaya CM, System Manager/Session Manager, AES, IX Messaging, and CMS
- OpenText AVST CX-E voicemail
- Eaton UPS
- Extreme Networks data switches
- Ribbon SBCs
Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree. Additional experience may substitute for education.
Equivalency Formula: JHH: Related experience beyond minimum training experience qualifications may substitute for formal education requirement on a two years' experience-for-one year education basis
Required Experience: Three years of related experience.
Salary Range: Minimum /hour - Maximum /hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
