The Career Services Department (CS) provides career development support for a diverse population within New York City, including job seekers, re-entry populations, students, career changers, veterans, and 55+ adults, to achieve their career goals. The Career Services Department offers free one-on-one coaching and workshops that focus on the different aspects of job search and career development. Career Services has two offices, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) and the Bronx Library Center (BLC). The Career Coach is expected to be available virtually and/or in-person, depending on the task, and will coordinate with internal departments to produce a range of NYPL/Career Services events.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:
- Supporting patrons with reviewing and/or writing/editing a resume and cover letter documents, page formatting and reviewing spelling and grammar
- Facilitation and development of workshops and training programs to assist library patrons build skills related to job search
- The number of appointments scheduled and meet the target goals set by the department
- Patrons the basics of career searching, resume writing, and other job support topics, as well as provide support with identifying and achieving career goals and creating an individualized career plan
- Branch staff throughout the organization about Career Services basics
- How to effectively respond to and predict career support and workforce development needs of NYPL patrons by engaging with external partners.
- To identify and execute Career Services strategic priorities, adapt to changing work environments, and engage in lifelong learning.
- The variety of programming that the Career Services office provides through working with the Career Services manager and team to propose and facilitate programs that are impactful and effective for the Library’s patrons.
- The partnership connections between the Library’s Career Services team and key stakeholders throughout the New York City workforce development landscape
- Patron’s digital literacy as they apply for employment, unemployment or job/education training opportunities.
- Become familiar with and understand the objective and goals of the department, as well as processes and policies
- Attend Career Services professional development training on writing resume, cover letter, and matching resume to job applications, Brainfuse JobNow, etc.
- Accept one-on-one job support appointments, supporting patrons with resume writing, cover letters, job applications, use of BrainfuseJobNow, etc.
- Proficiently use appointment system to schedule, edit, change appointments
- Provides assistance throughout the library system; makes appropriate referrals internally and externally

- Accept career coaching appointments, supporting patrons with mock interviews, resume review, job search strategies
- Refer patrons to library resources and job related information, and be able to train patrons on the use of library databases to assist with aptitude tests for determining patrons’ interests and talents
- Review, assess, route, answer and monitor follow up action steps on correspondence
- Recognize weaknesses and develop plans to aid in career growth
- Provide a positive and courteous attitude when engaging with the public by offering exceptional customer service, being able to problem-solve, and management time efficiently.
- Assists with the job search process including:
- Job search components (such as email and LinkedIn setup; job search navigation; uploading and downloading of documents, etc.)
- Documentation establishment (such as writing resumes and cover letters, as well as navigating online job searches, completing digital applications)
- Interview tactics (such as rehearsing and offering feedback in mock interviews)
- Creates and delivers workshops and other career events at both Career Services Hub locations and throughout NYPL Branches, and coordinates with Career Services Manager on programming, services, and events for neighborhood branch libraries.
- Assists with community outreach to promote and increase public participation and use of library services.
- Participates in staff meetings and collaborates with other Career Services coaches at BLC and SNFL locations, as well as with Adult Services teams at large.
- Travel throughout Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island as needed to provide support for Career Services programs and services at branch and partner locations
- Perform other related duties as required
Required Education, Experience & Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- 2 years of experience in career services, human resources, recruitment or related field
- Experience in a mentoring or advising role
- Strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Comfortable with communicating advice, feedback, and critiques professionally and concisely in individual and group settings
- Knowledge of human resources and recruiting techniques
- Demonstrated familiarity with NYC organizations providing employment and job training
- Adaptable to changing work environments and is a lifelong learner
- Strong problem-solving and decision making and time management skills
- Successfully demonstrated public service experience delivering career services with the ability to work well with diverse patrons
