The SARA, Inc. High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a remarkably talented, motivated, and imaginative Technical Writer I to support research and development activities and transition innovative technologies to the DoD, DoE, and their contractors in Colorado Springs, CO. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs and innovative new programs that supporting our growing customer base. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to operation.

 

Candidates must be strong team participants, have excellent communication skills, be resourceful and creative, and be willing to contribute to a multidisciplinary and fast-paced engineering environment.  

 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Edit, standardize, and/or make changes to material prepared by other contributing authors and technical personnel (engineers and program leads)
  • Produce and design physical media for distribution, including printed and bound workbooks, 3-ring binders, flyers, memos, brochures, and other marketing materials
  • Conduct interviews with production and engineering personnel and review historical reports to become familiar with product technologies and production methods
  • Meet with engineers, programmers, and project managers to learn about new products or processes
  • Organize technical content into clear, concise narratives that effectively convey information to a wide variety of potential audiences, including both highly technical and non-technical review entities
  • Review writing assignments and establish information exchange standards that ensure proper order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology
  • Observe, record, and document production, developmental, and experimental activities to define and detail important operating procedures and processes for both in-house and customer needs
  • Prepare and deliver training information for a wide range of applications
  • Copyedit technical contributions, technical reports, test plans, procedures, and other writing submittals
  • Create and maintain the organization of writing assignment matrices to ensure contract deliverable data requirements are submitted in accordance with requested electronic and hard-copy formats
  • Engage in high-level discussions related to engineering strategies, testing assessments, military standards, and system requirements
  • Translate complex physics and engineering concepts into test reports, test plans, standard operating procedures, etc.
  • Analyze datasets using foundational knowledge of descriptive statistics, algebra, and calculus
  • Understand and interpret engineering principles when working with datasets
  • Perform data structuring, organization, and formatting in Excel
  • Design or edit technical documentation, certificates, drawings, and fillable forms using AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, Canva, or Excel
  • Write, update, or edit work instructions to support technicians throughout the build process

  • Ability to present complex data in clear, concise text
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work independently
  • Ability to edit, and proofread work of colleagues
  • Ability to grasp theoretical and basic principles related to physics, mechanical, and electrical engineering
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, to include advanced features such as style control, templating, embedded cross-referencing, footnoting, bibliographic referencing, and document review/comment actions
  • Demonstrated ability to retain and apply detailed knowledge of contractual requirements, military standards, and company regulations when technical editing documentation

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Writing, or related field
  • One to three years of related experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent use of grammar
  • A working understanding of basic physics and engineering concepts
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Top Secret security clearance
  • May require light physical effort, involving standing, sitting, and carrying or lifting up to 15 pounds

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in graphic design
  • Active DoD Top Secret or DoE Q clearance

Pay Range

Salary at SARA is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $28 - 34 (hourly USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of SARA’s total compensation package for employees.  Positions are on-site, unless indicated otherwise.
