JOB PURPOSE:

The Data Visualization Specialist is responsible for designing, developing, and transforming complex data into intuitive, compelling, and actionable visualizations and data stories using Microsoft Power BI. This role plays a critical part in driving business understanding and decision-making across all levels of the organization. The specialist will collaborate closely with stakeholders across departments to understand their data needs and deliver scalable, user-friendly solutions that enhance business intelligence capabilities and empower self-service analytics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Design & Develop Visualizations:  

• Design and develop interactive Power BI dashboards, reports, and visualizations that effectively communicate key business metrics and insights
• Create visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces that enable stakeholders to easily interpret complex data
• Implement best practices for dashboard design, including appropriate chart selection, color schemes, and layout optimization
• Develop reusable templates and visualization standards to ensure consistency across reports 
• Present and clearly articulate insights derived from visualizations to technical and non-technical audiences.

Data Analysis and Management: 

• Connect Power BI to various data sources including Fabric, Oracle databases, Excel files, cloud services, and APIs
• Design and implement efficient data models using Power BI’s data modeling capabilities
• Create and maintain data relationships, calculated columns, and measures using DAX (Data Analysis Expressions)
• Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and optimal performance across all visualizations
• Document data lineage and maintain metadata for all developed solutions
• Collaborate with data engineering teams to define and refine data pipelines feeding Power BI
• Implement row-level security (RLS) to manage data access across user roles

Performance Optimization & Maintenance

• Monitor and optimize dashboard performance, including load times and data refresh schedules
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to Power BI visualizations and data connections
• Implement and maintain automated data refresh processes to ensure real-time or near-real-time reporting
• Perform regular maintenance and updates to existing dashboards based on changing business needs
• Conduct regular audits of Power BI workspaces and datasets to ensure governance and compliance

QUALIFICATIONS 

Experience, Education and Certifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business Intelligence, data Analytics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
• 5+ years of hands-on experience developing interactive visualizations in Microsoft Power BI, including Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, and Power BI Mobile
• Excellent design sensibility with attention to detail in creating visually appealing and functional dashboards
• Experience with Power BI REST API and embedding visualizations into custom applications
• Knowledge of UX/UI principles as they apply to business intelligence and data visualization
• Advanced Proficiency in Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) for creating complex calculations and measures 
• Experience using Power Query (M) for transforming and preparing data from various data sources
• Advanced SQL skills including writing and tuning complex queries
• Proven experience in performance tuning of Power BI visualizations and data models.
• Strong ability to gather requirements and communicate effectively with business stakeholders
• Experience with cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Fabric
• Excellent communication skills with ability to present complex data insights to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Microsoft Power BI certification preferred
• Auto Insurance claims industry experience Preferred
