General Job Summary:

The Senior Consumer Loan Underwriter is a senior-level role that supports both the bank’s loan growth and asset-quality goals. This position ensures that consumer loans are underwritten and approved within bank or investor guidelines while maintaining operational efficiency. The incumbent underwrites all consumer product types with a strong focus on mortgages, both portfolio and secondary market, as well as home equity loans and lines of credit.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure credit policies and procedures are followed.
  • Provide support, answer inquiries, and coordinate approval requirements and file status with Bankers, Closers, and Borrowers.
  • Review, analyze, and make final determinations on loan submissions using manual underwriting guidelines.
  • Verify borrower financial capacity and assess credit, income, assets, DTI, and LTV ratios.
  • Complete thorough analysis of files for accuracy and compliance with portfolio, investor, or government guidelines.
  • Render credit decisions on mortgage loans consistent with internal and investor standards.
  • Set clear, concise conditions for missing documentation and communicate underwriting decisions.
  • Monitor suspended files and ensure timely resolution.
  • Mentor junior underwriters and serve as a subject-matter expert for complex scenarios.

Requirements

  •   Expert-level understanding of mortgage and consumer underwriting principles.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.

Education and Experience:

  • 7+ years of consumer underwriting or credit review experience.
  • 5+ years underwriting mortgage loans.
  • FHA, FNMA, FHLMC, and/or VA underwriting experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to analyze and decision complex loan requests.
  • Technical knowledge of secondary-market lending.
  • Proficiency with loan origination systems (LOS) and related technology platforms.
