Specialist - Safety at Metrolina Greenhouses

Position Summary

This position will support Safety initiatives at the facility and assist in the completion of recurring tasks, receipt and forwarding of employee injury reports, and submission and follow-up on worker's compensation reports and claims as needed. Additionally, a successful Safety Specialist will facilitate education to employees and/or managers on safety programs, and work to ensure all programs are being followed consistently to ensure a safe work environment for all. 

This position may work at either our Huntersville, NC or our York, SC site, and supports the HR team and site leadership at their respective location. Both location positions report to and coordinate safety-related efforts with the Director of EHS and safety team.

Job Description

• Provide first-aid as needed for minor employee injuries and coordinate with outside medical providers for major medical emergencies. 
• Ensure PPE and other safety items are ordered, received, distributed as needed, proper stock levels are maintained, to include restocking the PPE vending machine. 
• Perform new employee safety training and coordinate recurring safety training requirements.  
• Complete routine administrative checks around the facility. 
• Administrative duties such as data entry into safety systems and tracking. 
• Upload SDS sheets into safety systems as needed.
• Upload training records into LMS/HRIS systems as completed for proper recordkeeping.
• Coordinates and enforces EHS programs. 
• Promotes safety awareness with employees. 
• Understands federal, state, and local safety regulations to maintain compliance with OSHA guidelines. 
• Support as needed the coordination with employees and management workers comp medical treatment and return-to-work processes. 
• Support collecting data and statements to support post-incident investigation efforts. 
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Prior experience with federal or state safety requirements whether in manufacturing or construction environments. 
• Strong desire to learn more about safety requirements and a strong desire to support Metrolina Greenhouses' effort to create a safe and strong work ethic. 
• Ability to remain calm and handle high-stress situations associated with medical emergencies, inclement weather actions and responses, and the implementation of the company's drug testing program.  
• Excellent time management, communication, recordkeeping, attention to detail, and organizational skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and maintain accurate records. 
• Ability to complete assigned tasks completely and accurately with minimal oversight. 
• Proficient with Microsoft products (Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, Word, Excel) and comfortable creating/updating training materials, performing online data entry, and online ordering and tracking of supplies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual in Spanish
• Completed OSHA 30-Hour, or extensive experience being trained in or implementing federal or state OSHA regulations. 
• Other professional safety qualifications or certifications
• Qualified in First Aid/CPR
• Experience operating fork trucks, scissor lifts, or machinery safely a plus

Job Setting & Physical Demands

Employees in this position work primarily indoors but may be required to ambulate between locations within a large outdoor environment. The role is largely sedentary, however some administrative duties such as filing are required. This would require the ability to lift files, open cabinets, bend or stand as necessary. To perform the job successfully the candidate must be able to use a computer and other standard office equipment such as phones, copiers, fax machines, etc. Fluency in the English language and the ability to see, speak, hear, read, and write are required. The ability to travel by all means of transportation to meet business needs is required, such as driving and riding in a golf cart around the facility. Work hours may fluctuate to accommodate seasonal work requirements and occasional support and training for evening and/or weekend shift employees.  

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds unassisted is required, up to 50 pounds with assistance.
