Position Duties

Assistant City Attorney I

  • Confers with and advises certain City departments concerning their respective duties, powers, functions and obligations.
  • Researches legal problems and prepares opinions, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, leases, permits and other legal documents.
  • Represents the City in court cases encompassing a wide variety of subject matters, including all phases of pretrial, trial and appellate work.
  • Represents the City in administrative hearings before City boards and commissions, and state and federal agencies.

Assistant City Attorney II

  • Represents the City in administrative hearings before City boards and commissions, and state and federal agencies.
  • Assists other attorneys in all phases of legal work on more complex litigation.
  • Attends meetings of the City Council, boards, and commissions as requested by the City Attorney.
  • Prepare and monitor annual/bi-annual budget for the City Attorney’s office.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of :

  • Civil and administrative procedure; pleading and practices and effective techniques in the presentation of court cases
  • Judicial procedures and rules of evidence
  • Principles, methods and techniques of legal research and investigation
  • Responsibilities and obligations of public officials and administrative agencies
Ability to: 
  • Define issues, perform legal research, analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and make sound recommendations.
  • Present statements of fact, law and argument clearly and logically
  • Exercise sound, independent judgment within general policy guidelines and legal parameters.

Education, Experience, and Special Requirements:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. 

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as an attorney engaged in the practice of civil law, preferably in a municipal setting, and one year of supervisory experience. 
  • Must be a current member of the California State Bar Association. Must be willing and able to attend evening meetings. 
  • Specified positions may require possession of a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Examination Process: An oral board will be administered. This recruitment will create an eligibility list and may be used to fill current and future vacancies. 

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
  • Positive past employment references
  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
  • Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test 
Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
