About the Department
This is a supervisory position that plans, schedules, and coordinates the work activities of employees and crews in the Parks Maintenance Division working under the general direction of the Parks Superintendent. This is a working foreman position that performs a wide variety of activities related to the maintenance of parks and grounds and performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Supervises the maintenance of landscaped areas for the County and ensures the proper maintenance and repair of landscaping tools and equipment. Performs related work as required.
Position Duties
- Plans, schedules, coordinates, prioritizes, and supervises the work activities of work crews in the Parks Maintenance Division.
- Supervises and performs activities related to the maintenance and repair of all park buildings, facilities, and equipment, such as lawn care and landscaping, concrete work, painting, fence repair, and building maintenance.
- Operates equipment, such as loaders, backhoes, and dump trucks involved in parks maintenance operations including general lawn and landscaping equipment
- Instructs supervised employees in the proper use of equipment and assists in developing and maintaining safety programs for the Division.
- Provides necessary corrective consultation with employees as needed.
- Ensures that all park-related equipment is adequately maintained.
- Prepares and maintains records and reports related to daily maintenance activities and facilities usage.
- Responds courteously to citizen inquiries and concerns regarding County Parks and related facilities.
- Assists with purchasing parks-related equipment and supplies and maintaining related inventories
- Evaluates employee work performance and conduct.
- Conducts and completes performance evaluations for supervised employees.
- Supervises and maintains County landscaped areas.
- Mows County parks, surrounding County buildings, and conservation lands.
- Operates power mowers, trimmers, hedgers ,chainsaws, and other equipment.
- Maintains sprinkler systems.
- Repairs pipes ,hoses, and fittings.
- Supervises the maintenance of athletic fields and facilities.
- Assists in the maintenance and repair of landscaping tools and equipment including regular and routine care and maintenance of chainsaws, power mowers, line trimmers, edgers, hedgers, and other equipment.
- Performs inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs of playgrounds and playground facilities.
- Mix, apply, and supervise the application of herbicides and utilization/direction of best management practices for the treatment of invasive/exotic plant species
- Performs related work as required.
- This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, and represent the County at seminars, workshops, and conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by a minimum of (2) two years of experience in areas such as landscaping, mechanics and/or heavy equipment usage.
Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience supervising and performing building and grounds maintenance.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License
- CDL-A Driver’s License (preferred)
- Florida Pesticide Applicator License (6 months to obtain)
- Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (12 months to obtain)
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Ability to operate computers and tablets in an effective manner, including use of the Microsoft Office Suite.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance of parks and the maintenance and repair of related facilities and equipment, including basic knowledge of lawn maintenance.
Knowledge of the proper and safe operation and maintenance of common tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of buildings, equipment, and grounds.
Knowledge of facilities and grounds requirements for various recreational and athletic activities.
Knowledge of public and employee safety practices to minimize injury and property damage at County work sites.
Skill in determining priorities and establishing work schedules to effectively meet County and community needs.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability to plan, coordinate, assign, train, and supervise the work of subordinates engaged in a variety of activities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, County officials, and the public.
Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures for tree trimming and those to be followed in generating power-driven tools and equipment
Other Qualifications
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or heavy equipment and various weather conditions typical of South Florida. Work is performed out of doors and administrative work is performed in a County vehicle. Equipment repairs and reporting to work occurs at the County's Parks Maintenance Division. Various poisonous plants, insects and other wildlife may be encountered.
