Position Summary
The Purchasing and Materials Manager is responsible for leading all purchasing, procurement, and materials management activities to ensure the company maintains optimal inventory levels, reliable supplier partnerships, and cost-effective sourcing. This role oversees the full cycle of materials management including purchasing, supplier negotiations, inventory control, logistics, and materials planning—to support operational efficiency, cost savings, and on-time production.
Key Responsibilities
- Purchasing & Procurement
- Develop, implement, and manage procurement strategies to ensure cost-effective and timely supply of goods and services.
- Negotiate contracts, pricing, and terms with vendors and suppliers.
- Identify, evaluate, and qualify new suppliers to strengthen the supply chain.
- Materials Management & Inventory Control
- Oversee inventory levels to balance availability with cost efficiency, minimizing excess and obsolescence.
- Implement inventory management systems, processes, and best practices.
- Coordinate with production and operations to forecast material needs.
- Supplier & Vendor Relations
- Maintain strong relationships with key suppliers to ensure quality, reliability, and innovation.
- Resolve supplier issues related to quality, delivery, or service.
- Monitor supplier performance and maintain scorecards.
- Logistics & Distribution
- Manage inbound and outbound logistics to ensure timely delivery of raw materials and finished goods.
- Oversee warehouse operations and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead and develop a team of buyers, planners, and warehouse staff.
- Collaborate with operations, finance, and engineering to align materials strategies with business goals.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in purchasing, inventory, and materials management.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in purchasing, supply chain, or materials management (manufacturing industry preferred).
- Strong negotiation and vendor management skills.
- Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Leadership experience with proven ability to manage and develop a team.
- APICS, CPSM, or similar certification preferred.
