 Position Summary: 

The Materials Engineer assesses controlled processes for compliance by preparing and evaluating laboratory samples and accepting or rejecting the process based on internal, external, and customer specifications. Sample preparation and analysis are performed using metallurgical saws, hot press or cold mounts, polishing equipment, microscopes, and hardness testers. In addition to routine process evaluations, the Materials Engineer conducts investigative analyses to support field investigations, customer requests, and process control and optimization efforts.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare metallurgical samples (cutting, mounting, polishing) and perform microstructural and hardness examinations on nickel-based alloys and stainless steel. 
  • Evaluate results against internal, external, and customer specifications to determine acceptance/ rejection.
  • Perform root-cause and investigative analyses for field failures and customer concerns.
  • Support baseline process control and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Document findings and communicate technical results to cross-functional teams and customers.
  • Assure continued compliance to GE S-400 requirements
  • Assist in prioritizing daily Lab workflow 
  • Provide guidance for Lab Technicians and entry level Materials Engineers. 
  • Create/ modify internal procedure(s) (as required)
  • Ensure all required Round Robin Testing is completed and up to date
  • Participation in internal and external audits (as required)
  • Manage all etchant materials (expired, no longer used, proper disposal, etc.)
  • Input data and report Lab Performance metrics 

  Required Qualifications:

  •  Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Material Science and or master's degree in Materials Science - For one of the following below
    • Materials Engineer -I -Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Material Science and 5+ years of experience or Masters in Material Science and 1+ years’ experience.
    • Materials Engineer- II -Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Material Science and 7+ years of experience or Masters in Material Science and 3+ years’ experience.
    • Materials Engineer - III -Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Material Science and 10+ years of experience or Masters in Material Science and 5+ years’ experience.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills 
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to read and interpret Engineering Drawings and specifications
  • Strong computer skills (MS Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Strong time management skill
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities
    •  Safety and Compliance minded 

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic manufacturing environment knowledge
  • Knowledge of Superalloys and Stainless
  • Basic understanding of AS9100/ ISO 9001
  • Prior materials lab experience is a plus
  • Use of digital microscopes
  • Knowledge of superalloys and manufacturing processes (vacuum brazing, welding, EDM, etc.)
  • Experience with round robin testing
  • Related ASM course work
