Job Summary: The Ophthalmic Tech supports the surgery center in our busy surgery center. This full-time position involves direct patient care, clinical tasks and administrative responsibilities.
· Obtaining/documenting patient history and providing pre-operative instructions by phone
· Performing patient work up prior to YAG and SLT laser procedures, including all IOP testing
· Obtaining all appropriate consent forms for laser procedures
· Greeting/escorting patients to exam room, patient education regarding procedures to be performed
· Administering pre-operative drops before, during and after YAG and SLT laser procedures
· Room set up for the physician; clean up following procedures
· Assisting in the procedure room with YAG and SLT lasers and trouble shooting laser equipment
· Obtaining certification to assist with Femtosecond lasers in the operating room and functions as the Laser Safety Officer
· Documenting into the EMR system
· Stocking supplies
· Overseeing patient flow
· Reviewing surgical charts for history and physical documentation
· Assisting the clinical staff in the perioperative areas with miscellaneous projects/tasks
· Assisting the clinical department as needed
· Compliance with all practice procedures and protocols
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree preferred.
BLS Certification required
Experience: Progressive experience working in a surgical environment, in a clinical capacity; Clinical experience within office-based Ophthalmology highly preferred.
Accredited training program preferred but not required
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; excellent computer software skills
· Superior level of customer service and friendly demeanor
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks
· Meticulous attention to detail
· Excellent interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients, physicians, clinicians and administrators
Working Conditions:
Environment: This position is located in an Ambulatory Surgery Center. Physical Demands: this position requires extensive mobility, walking, and standing. There is a potential exposure to patients with communicable diseases and/or blood borne pathogens.
Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED). Associates degree with relevant experience preferred.
Experience: 1+ years of prior ophthalmic experience.
Certificates and Licenses: Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) or equivalent. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
A surgery center environment with a controlled atmosphere. Possible exposure to staff or patients with communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens.
Vision (Near, Distance, Color, Peripheral, Depth Perception), normal range of hearing, ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (gloves, face mask, eye shield, gown), standing for long periods of time
