Job Title: Para Educator Supervision
General Description: Paraeducators perform a variety of duties in the school at the direction of the school principal or Special Services Director. Specific duties may be assigned by the school principal, director, and/or by individual staff with whom the paraeducator is assigned to work. Duties may include supervisory, instructional, and/or assisting identified students with daily hygiene activities, including personal care.
Essential Functions:
- Supervise students in the health room, hallways, classroom and/or in the cafeteria.
- Must be willing to be exposed to students who are ill.
- Monitor and assist patients/students, as necessary.
- Follow procedures established by the school nurse and school district policies.
- Assist nursing staff and provide support to nursing staff with clerical duties
- Maintains confidentiality of health records and other sensitive information.
- Accurately documents student visits to the health room.
- May need to travel between the Elementary and Secondary campus as needed.
- Handle discipline, restraint, or disciplinary referrals of students who behave contrary to identified school rules or the student’s IEP.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- ONE of the following:
- At least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter hours or 48 semester hours, all at 100 level or above) OR Associate's degree (or higher)
- OR
- Successfully pass all six areas of the ParaPro Assessment developed by Educational Testing Service (Praxis)
- Completes State required paraeducator Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) training as identified by the Professional Educators Standards Board (PESB) & receives their paraeducator certificate within the State required timeframe(s)
- Ability to deal with students, staff, and parents in a warm and confident manner at all times.
- Ability to work with emergency/crisis situations in a calm professional manner.
- Ability to transfer a student from one position to another safely and appropriately.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and staff.
- Ability to multi-task, be flexible and attentive to detail in an often-chaotic environment prone to interruptions.
- Ability to use sound judgment in evaluation of situations regarding student health issues while recognizing scope of authority.
- Ability to organize health room, paperwork, set priorities and manage time while working with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality of students’ records and information required.
- Ability to use Macintosh computers and other technological tools to assist with work completion;
- Maintain current First Aid and CPR certification;
- A helpful, calm, friendly, and polite manner when interacting with students, parents, other health providers, and district staff;
- The ability to make reasoned decisions, exhibit mature judgment, responsibility and dependability;
- Exemplify good personal health practices and mental health attitudes;
- Excellent communication skills, in writing and orally;
- Ability to interpret students' health needs to parents and school staff;
- Ability to effectively plan, organize, conduct, and supervise work assignments, and to work collaboratively with administration, and school nurse.
- Appropriate discretion concerning students, staff, and confidential or privileged information.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Demands: - The employee must be able to wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, such as face mask, face shield, gloves and/or gowns.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, to stand or walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment: - Required to attend to children’s personal hygiene. Frequently required to wear protective clothing such as gloves.
- Exposed to infectious diseases and illnesses carried by students.
- Occasionally required to deal with distraught or angry people
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and can vary depending upon daily activity.
Working Conditions:
- Works in the health rooms at each school, frequently using a computer.
- Works in a regular or special needs classroom, in an office, and/or in a lunchroom or playground requiring neat, clean personal appearance and work apparel appropriate to a school environment.
- Moves within the school and occasionally between school locations.
- Uses a computer for multiple functions, and a telephone and/or email to communicate.
- Bends, twists, and lifts up to 20 pounds
- May be required to lift or support or restrain students.
- Uses fingers, hands, arms, facial expressions, and vocalization when working with students.
- Occasionally exposed to high decibel alarm systems during drills or an actual emergency.
- May be exposed to blood and sharps.
- Uses a telephone to communicate.
