Additional Information: Show/Hide Description: Under the general direction of the Conservation and Outdoors Division Manager, the Park Attendant performs a variety of duties in the operation and maintenance of City of Evanston parks and park facilities. The Park Attendant is responsible for visiting parks, beaches and special events throughout the City of Evanston and supporting park operations. Work includes light park maintenance, public restroom maintenance, program and event support, and documenting incidents. Workdays include weekends and holiday shifts.
Job Summary: (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following)
Perform custodial work, maintenance tasks, and repair work in picnic areas, public restrooms, athletic fields and grounds.
Hang permits at designated picnic locations.
Visit parks, beaches and special events throughout the City; inform public of rules, regulations and programs; check for and addresses safety, security, and maintenance issues.
Check for locked doors, proper lighting and related building security at parks, recreation centers and shelters.
Check safety conditions of park facilities and submits work orders for areas that need repairs.
Distribute information to park patrons on programs and/or activities.
Assist police and fire departments on calls in a crowd control capacity.
Operate vehicle to deliver equipment and travel between different sites. Trailer equipment between different sites.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
Two (2) or more years of work experience in parks and recreation, forestry, or similar position is preferred.
Must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
Must be willing and able to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within 3 months of employment and maintain them as a condition of employment.
Knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:
Ability to learn and willingness to adhere to City of Evanston and Parks and Recreation department ordinances, rules, policies and procedures guiding park usage and special event occasions.
Knowledge of proper procedures in managing park visitors and handling emergencies.
Ability to educate and influence citizens in a manner consistent with the ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures guiding park usage and special event occasions.
Ability to explain the services provided by the department.
Ability to communicate tactfully and courteously with the public.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate vehicle reports and incident reports.
Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Physical Requirements of Work:
Ability to walk for long periods of time.
Requires the ability to see, hear, speak.
Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly.
Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Must possess good color and depth perception.
Ability to work on feet, stand, and walk around and monitor and scan events, facilities, parks, and fields for maintenance needs.
Ability to work outdoors, regularly, in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity.
Environmental conditions include performing activities both inside and outside; no environmental hazards indicated
Occasionally exposed to potentially dangerous situations.
Supervision: Work is performed under the general direction of the Outdoor and Conservation Division Manager or designee. Assignments are generally received in the form of desired objectives and the employee is expected to complete assignments without detailed supervision. Judgment is required in interpreting and adapting guidelines to specific cases or problems. The employee is responsible for completing work according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communications, meetings and feedback from the supervisor and from other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Additional guidance is provided through City and departmental policies, procedures and ordinances.
Rate: Starting at $19.00 per hour.
Schedule: This is a seasonal position with up to 40 hours per week in the main season (spring, summer and fall months between April 15 and November 15), and up to 30 hours per week in the off-season (winter months between mid-November and mid-April). Schedule may include mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Seasonal employees limited to 1,000 hours.
Public Contact: The employee has significant contact with the general public and needs strong public relations and interpersonal skills to educate and influence the public, and when handling all situations, including emergencies.
