The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, solutions-driven, and well-versed in underwriting complex scenarios. This role will be critical in ensuring accurate and compliant underwriting decisions across our lending channels, with a particular emphasis on Non-QM and Jumbo loan structuring, analysis, and risk assessment. You'll work closely with loan officers, processors, and leadership to support efficient, high-quality decisions that meet investor and agency guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite a minimum of three new loan submissions per day, plus resubmissions, in accordance with internal SLAs and quality standards

  • Analyze and calculate income (including self-employment income) per agency, investor, and Non-QM guidelines

  • Underwrite a wide variety of loan types, including Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, Non-QM, and Jumbo loans

  • Review and decision loans based on credit, income, asset, and collateral analysis, including complex borrower profiles often seen in Jumbo and Non-QM loan scenarios

  • Recommend alternative structuring options for challenging loan files, particularly for Non-QM borrowers (e.g., bank statement, asset depletion, DSCR)

  • Evaluate appraisals and collateral using tools such as Collateral Underwriter and Loan Collateral Advisor, with a focus on high-value properties typical in Jumbo lending

  • Ensure accurate and complete data entry into LOS and AUS (1008, LT, LA, AUS findings, funding conditions)

  • Stay current on Non-QM and Jumbo investor overlays, agency updates, and internal guideline changes

  • Communicate underwriting decisions clearly to processing, sales, and secondary marketing teams

  • Respond promptly to investor or auditor inquiries, conditions, and QC reviews

  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment that values compliance, accuracy, and timely decision-making

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience with FNMA, FHLMC, and investor guidelines

  • Proficient with AUS and manual underwriting (DU, LP, GUS)

  • Direct experience underwriting Non-QM and Jumbo loans, including familiarity with alternative documentation types (e.g., bank statements, P&L, asset-based income, DSCR)

  • Deep knowledge of Non-QM and Jumbo eligibility guidelines, risk factors, and structuring strategies

  • Experience with Conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA underwriting

  • Active CHUMS ID (held for at least 5 years and active within the past 3)

  • SAR designation (held for at least 5 years and active within the past 3)

  • Sign-off authority up to conforming loan limits for 1-unit properties

  • Comfortable working with investor-specific guidelines (e.g., Amerihome, Chase, Wells Fargo, PennyMac)

  • Proficiency in AllRegs, Microsoft Office, and Loan Origination Systems

  • Strong understanding of:

    • Agency guidelines (FHA, VA, USDA, Conventional)

    • Credit and income analysis, including self-employed borrowers

    • Real estate collateral valuation and risk assessment

    • Texas-specific loan types, including Texas A6 and A4 F(2) refinances

  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time management

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Professional, service-oriented, and collaborative approach

  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple files under tight deadlines
