Construction Safety Intern

As a safety intern, you will support our heavy civil construction experts who are building roads, commercial developments, residential projects and critical infrastructure. Exposure to highway construction, municipal projects, large-scale excavation, and underground utilities. Every day brings opportunities to expand your skillset and grow your career.
This seasonal internship includes strong benefits package:

What you Do:
- Hands-on experience, assisting in conducting daily safety inspections and audits of construction sites, identifying potential hazards and recommending corrective actions.
- Support the implementation and enforcement of safety policies, procedures, and programs as outlined by OSHA, MSHA and company standards.
- Participating in safety meetings and pre-task planning sessions with field crews.
- Help investigate incidents, near-misses and unsafe conditions, document findings and assist in implementing corrective actions.
- Contribute to the development of safety training materials for employees.
- Monitor the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), equipment, and site conditions to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Support preparation and maintenance of safety documentation, including inspection checklists, reports, permits, and safety data sheets.
- Assist with industrial hygiene sampling.
- Engage with field staff to promote a positive safety culture, encourage hazard reporting, and recognize safe work practices.
Learning Objectives:
- Gain hands-on experience with safety management systems on large-scale construction projects.
- Understand the regulatory framework governing occupational safety in heavy civil construction, including OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and local requirements.
- Develop skills in hazard identification, risk assessment, and accident investigation.
- Learn how to communicate safety concepts effectively with diverse teams, from craft workers to project managers.
- Build familiarity with the preparation and maintenance of safety documentation and reporting tools.
- Experience the interplay between field operations, engineering, human resources and safety management in a dynamic construction environment.
- Practice presentation skills, influencing without authority and persistence.
Work Environment:
- Full-time, typically 3-6 months (with flexibility to accommodate academic schedules).
- Work hours may include early mornings or evenings, depending on project needs.
- Some travel may be required to job sites, expenses covered by the company.
- Some weekend work may be required during critical construction phases.
What we Look For:
- Passionate about employee safety and an understanding of heavy civil construction.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
- Strong attention to detail, observation skills, and a proactive, positive problem-solving attitude.
- Basic knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety principles is preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable with mobile inspection/reporting apps.
- Physically able to walk construction sites, climb ladders, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Willingness to always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) on site.
- Valid driver�s license preferred.
