Description

The Communications Assistant supports the organization’s communications, marketing, and outreach functions. This role helps promote the mission, programs, and impact of Habitat for Humanity of Durham by creating, editing, and distributing content; maintaining communications channels; and assisting with event and media coordination.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in drafting, editing, and proofreading communications materials, including:
    • Newsletters (print and digital)
    • Press releases
    • Social media content (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
    • Website updates
    • Internal memos and reports
    • Donor and partner communications
  • Support the creation of marketing collateral, e.g. flyers, brochures, banners, infographics
  • Maintain and update media and contact lists (local media, partners, influencers)
  • Assist with social media management: scheduling posts, monitoring engagement, collecting analytics
  • Help coordinate public events, fundraising campaigns, community outreach, workshops, and/or site dedications
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g. Development, Volunteer Engagement, Homeowner Services) to gather content, stories, data, and photos
  • Support photo/video/photo-story content: take photos or schedule shoots; assist with selecting images; assist with multimedia editing as needed
  • Ensure that all communications materials are aligned with Habitat’s brand guidelines (tone, logo usage, messaging)
  • Assist with administrative tasks related to communications: tracking project timelines, maintaining archives/media library, organizing materials, invoices if any, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field preferred
  • Experience: 1–2 years of relevant experience (nonprofit, communications, marketing, or related sector) is a plus
  • Strong writing and editing skills; attention to detail
  • Proficiency with digital tools: social media platforms, content management systems (CMS), email newsletter tools, basic graphic design tools (e.g. Canva) Microsoft Office suite
  • Some experience or comfort with photography/video is helpful
  • Capacity to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a team and also independently
