About the Department


The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.
Position Duties
- Prepare and give educational tours to school youth groups.
- Teach youth summer camps and family night walks.
- Assist with Visitor Center operations and daily customer service.
- Help prepare special events onsite and offsite.
- Assist with grounds maintenance and trails projects.
- Assist with zoo animals, wildlife rescue, and education.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
This position is open to all candidates meeting the following minimum qualifications:
- Experience working or volunteering at a Nature Center, Museum, Zoo, or similar public setting.
- Experience with public speaking.
- Experience working with children and diverse groups of people.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Course study in environmental sciences, biology, zoology, or park naturalist is highly desirable.
- Basic computer skills required, with knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook highly desired.
- Public relations skills.
- Strong time management skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and customer service skills.
- Ability to work outside in various weather conditions, walk for up to two miles on uneven surfaces, kneel, stoop, bend, lift up to 20 lbs., and stand for long periods of time.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule.
