At Pepper Joe’s, we aren’t working in your typical greenhouse!
Are you an entrepreneurial self-starter who loves building systems, writing protocols, and owning outcomes? If so, you’ll fit right in with the Pepper Joe’s brand and our highly independent team! We grow super-hot pepper plants for shipment and for seed sales in a hydroponic, little to no-soil environment in Urbana, Iowa. As a Greenhouse Technician, you’ll contribute to the team by helping scale our high-energy operation, fueling the Pepper Joe’s brand—home to some of the hottest pepper seeds, plants, and pods on the market.
What you’ll be doing:
- Own production operations end-to-end: propagation, vegetative growth, pollination support, harvest, de-seeding, drying, and seed conditioning.
- Run a clean, bio-secure house: sanitation plans, tool/space hygiene, and PPE compliance (capsaicin exposure is real—gloves, eye protection, masks/respirators as needed).
- Dial in hydroponics: mix nutrients, manage reservoirs and EC/pH, monitor irrigation cycles, and keep systems (pumps, lines, sensors) humming.
- Build and document SOPs: create clear protocols for fertilization schedules, plant testing, pruning, harvest, seed extraction, drying, and storage.
- Track the data: log germination rates, seed purity/viability, yields, and environmental metrics; use data to drive continuous improvement.
- Coordinate cross-team work: partner on shipping/order timing, inventory accuracy, and equipment maintenance schedules.
- Lead seasonal pushes: organize crews for harvesting and de-seeding; train teammates on safety and quality standards.
You’ll thrive here if you:
- Bring a builder’s mindset: you see gaps, design a process, and document it.
- Are hands-on and technical: comfortable troubleshooting pumps, plumbing, sensors, timers, and environmental controls.
- Communicate clearly and keep work organized—lists, checklists, and clean logs are your norm.
- Are math-confident (mixing nutrients, dilutions, basic stats/percentages) and tool-savvy (Excel/Sheets, Outlook/Email).
- Don’t mind heat/humidity, strong peppers, and fast pace; you suit up and get it done.
- Have experience in hydroponic production or seed production, preferred but not required.
- Have knowledge of Plant Science, Horticulture, or related field, highly preferred but not required.
Work environment & physical requirements:
- Standing/walking most of the shift; lifting up to ~50 lbs; repetitive tasks during peak harvest/de-seeding.
- Greenhouse heat/humidity; capsaicin handling with required PPE.
- Some seasonal/weekend work during peak cycles.
