The Working Supervisor will ensure the safe and efficient manufacturing operations at Vollrath. This position provides hands-on production support for production processes and people to ensure competitive quality and efficiency. Must possess strong supervisory skills and take an active leadership role in the motivation and development of shift employees to support customer requirements and lean manufacturing activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, & OTHER DUTIES

People

  • Communicate with co-workers in a timely, informative, and non-punishing manner.
  • Supervise and be accountable for the activities of shift personnel with emphasis on safety, quality, delivery, cost, and communication.
  • Responsible for the staffing of your shift, including scheduled overtime, work meetings, call-ins, and vacation schedules.
  • Responsible for onboarding new employees, including training documentation, follow-up, and ensuring employees are adhering to procedures
  • Ensure all shift personnel are following Vollrath policies, procedures, and are performing jobs as needed to meet and exceed customer requirements
  • Responsible for the development, discipline, and attendance of shift personnel.
  • Lead and attend employee meetings 
  • Schedule staff training and conduct refresher training when necessary.

SAFETY

  • Consistently follows, supports, and enforces safe work practices and company policies.
  • Report all injuries, safety violations, damage, close calls or concerns in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct incident investigations to identify and implement corrective actions, including entering in JDE.  
  • Deliver and attend safety training (Entrees, annual training, safety alerts, etc.)
  • Operate powered industrial trucks safely and efficiently.

Quality

  • Support quality systems and policies (NCMR, CCR, CAR/SCAR, ISO audits).
  • Support and assist with quality initiatives (auditing, rework/sort, etc.)
  • Identify BOM/Routing improvements 

Delivery

  • Create and review shift production reports and activities to ensure accurate reporting & documentation with appropriate corrective action for discrepancies, including focus on identifying root cause.
  • Discuss the status of production daily with other supervisors/managers and scheduling as appropriate, and ensure the transfer of appropriate information from shift to shift by all shift personnel.
  • Actively operates presses, performs troubleshooting, and supports the team with technical expertise as needed.
  • Stage components for production when needed.
  • Set up and perform changeovers 
  • Prepare all paperwork and perform all transactions accurately and timely. 
  • Assist with production in other areas or with other activities/tasks as required.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and technical teams to ensure machine uptime.
  • Address and escalate equipment, personnel, or safety issues to management.

Cost

  • Ensure the accuracy of all required information on labor reports and inventory transactions.
  • Ensure the accurate punching of work orders by production personnel 

Continuous Improvement

  • Keep a clean and organized work area, utilizing the concepts of 6S (Safety, Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain) on a daily basis.
  • Conduct GEMBA walks and periodic shift/position meetings with staff to address any issues or concerns.
  • Maintain, share, and communicate glass walls

Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work environment can be busy, noisy, and conditions vary with the seasons of the year. The environment also contains some mechanical and chemical hazards.

Protective requirements include safety shoes and glasses.  Other protective equipment may also be necessary based on the specific task.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Yes, supervises hourly direct reports.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Supervisory experience and/or formal education in supervision or management desired. 

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Requires 4 4-year high school degree or G.E.D., an Associate’s Degree, or equivalent experience.   

PREFERRED EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

3+ years of experience in plastic injection molding operations; supervisory experience strongly preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & COMPETENCIES

  • Must have effective written and verbal communication skills and work well in the team environment. The ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos.  Ability to write correspondence. The ability to effectively present information to other employees in the organization one on one and in group settings. The ability to communicate courteously with good grammar and without the use of profanity.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Professionalism: Must represent Vollrath professionally when working with vendors and internal and external customers.  Requires the ability to operate various office equipment to include a computer, copier, fax machine, printer, etc.  Excellent communication and organizational skills.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and experience with JDE software is a plus.
