Position Summary The Communications Manager will serve as the strategic lead for public relations, media engagement, and district-wide messaging. Reporting directly to and working in close partnership with the Superintendent, this position plays a vital role in shaping the voice and visibility of the district. The Communications Manager will oversee proactive, timely, and transparent communication efforts that build trust and strengthen connections with students, families, staff, and the broader Bethlehem community.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Develop, coordinate, and implement comprehensive communication strategies, including media outreach, press releases, newsletters, website updates, and social media content.
Serve as the district’s primary media liaison, cultivating strong relationships with press, community partners, and key stakeholders.
Craft and deliver time-sensitive clear, and engaging messaging in collaboration with the Superintendent’s office and district leadership.
Lead crisis communications, providing rapid, accurate response and guidance during urgent or sensitive situations.
Oversee scheduling, content development, and logistics for Superintendent-led communications, briefings, and presentations.
Ensure consistent messaging and branding which adheres to district policies, guidelines, and standards across all communication platforms.
Plan, coordinate, attend, and promote district-wide events, initiatives, and community engagement efforts that strengthen public trust.
Monitor media coverage, social sentiment, and public feedback, preparing regular analysis and actionable recommendations for leadership.
Maintain active membership in PennSPRA (Pennsylvania School Public Relations Association) and leverage networking opportunities to enhance district communications.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
Proven experience in communications, with a strong background in education, nonprofit, or public sector environments.
Strong understanding of modern messaging and branding.
Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Proficiency in using modern communication tools and software.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and stakeholders.
Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.
Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
High level of creativity and strategic thinking, with an ability to develop innovative communication solutions.
Availability to provide responsive engagement in dynamic situations, including crisis communications.
Three to five (or more) years of experience in Communications, Public Relations, or similar functions.
Preferred
Master’s degree in Communications or a related discipline.
Prior experience working directly with a school district Superintendent or executive-level leadership.
Familiarity with Bethlehem-area community networks, stakeholders, and media outlets.
Salary & Benefits Salary Range: Group 1 of the Non-Instructional Meet and Discuss Act 93 Compensation Plan.
