About the Department

The Maintenance of Way (MOW) Instructor will train, instruct, and monitor the various classifications in MOW - Laborer, Trackperson, System Repairperson, Equipment Operator, Foreperson, General Foreperson, Section Foreperson, Supervisor and Superintendent - on their duties and responsibilities; and will certify and re-certify various classifications on a yearly and/or bi yearly basis

Position Duties

  • Conduct classroom and field instruction of all MOW Training Programs for both MBTA Track and Equipment Employees.
  • Train all employees on MOW Track Standards, and the safe operation, interaction, and understanding of all equipment utilized on and off the Right of Way (ROW).
  • Work with the Safety Department and the Rapid Transit Lines Instructors to train MOW Personnel on the correct flagging procedures during both revenue and non-revenue hours.
  • Instruct personnel on how to conduct observations of MOW Employees in the performance of their duties.
  • Assist in the development of training programs, curriculums, competency matrices, certifications, development/performance plans, Powerpoint presentations, films, handouts and written/practical examinations for the professional development and promotion of employees.
  • Re-instruct employees on their duties when needed or directed by the Director of Maintenance of Way Training.
  • Implement and maintain manual and computerized systems to monitor training activities and to ensure compliance with established budgets.
  • Assist in conducting investigations of accidents and incidents as required.
  • Conduct safety checks on equipment and vehicles.
  • Assist Operations during special events and holidays such as the 4th of July and New Year's Eve.
  • Participate in the testing of new and modified vehicles in order to assist in the analysis of equipment and development of new training modules.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and assist at emergencies, events, and/or transport crews or equipment as needed.
  • Respond, either directly or through others, to emergencies twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees.
  • Assist in the management of a workforce by ensuring the fair and consistent application and strict adherence to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the Authority including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment and Anti-Retaliation policies.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned

Supervision
  • Monitor the various classifications in MOW - Laborer, Trackperson, System Repairperson, Equipment Operator, Foreperson, General Foreperson, Section Foreperson, Supervisor and Superintendent

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) from an accredited institution.
  • Five (5) years of experience in rail/track repair, maintenance and construction.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake endorsement. 
  • Effective organizational and analytical skills.
  • The ability to evaluate and guide the performance of others in various training situations.
  • Have excellent training and presentation skills.
  • The ability to use Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint or database applications.
  • The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
  • Applicants may be required to pass a written assessment as a part of the interview process.
  • Have the ability to work any and all shifts and/or locations assigned or directed.
  • Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Have the ability to supervisor and work effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • Successful applicants must have English language skills required for the effective performance of the position.

Preferred Experience and Skills
  • A degree in education, transportation, or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Experience as a Foreperson or Supervisor of MOW; and/or experience in a training capacity.
