General Function: Assists in the day-to-day operation of transportation services in the school system in accordance with district and state standards of operation for such facilities. Ensures that all students are transported safely between schools and homes.
Education/Training/Experience: Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of four (4) years’ of experience in institutional and school transportation programs. Preferred: 2 year College degree and six to eight (6-8) years’ of experience in institutional and school transportation programs.
Knowledge/Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of institutional transportation scheduling. Knowledge of district and state transportation rules and regulations. Ability to understand, interpret, and apply procedures in sound fiscal management. Supervisory, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to encourage, maintain good communications between and among departments, student body, faculty, staff, and visitors, and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, interest, and optimism to students, parents, faculty and staff. Ability to make decisions of immediate necessity when directing the work of transportation staff and to resolve complaints regarding transportation. Commercial driver’s license examiner. School bus driver instructor. Knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations. Knowledge of the CBA, Code of Conduct and SFPS School District Policies. First Aid and CPR instructor. Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
Essential Job Functions: Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following:
Assists with managing the transportation department on a daily basis; this includes overseeing and ensuring coverage for all bus routes at all times.
Knowledge of all department software: Trip Tracker to be able to assist with all functions related to activity trips in the absence of the Activity Coordinator, Versatrans RP to assist with building routes, and PowerSchool to look up student information.
Knowledge of GPS software and assist in monitoring route hours and mileage.
Knowledge of bus accident procedures to respond in the absence of the Director.
Monitors and records all employee absences on a daily basis and approves time off requests.
Helps with dispatching and answering phones as needed.
Job Description – Assistant Director of Transportation
Investigates requests and complaints concerning transportation.
Meets with employees regarding complaints, completes progressive Letters of Discipline, and communicates with HR in accordance with CBA.
Assists in providing training and direction to employees.
Monitors all non-special education staff and conducts employee evaluations with input from the Director.
Has knowledge of all bus routes that transport students to and from schools. Route knowledge to be able to cover routes when drivers are lacking and when quick schedule changes are necessary.
Designs and directs transportation-safety program for students and faculty.
Assists with hiring new employees and ensuring proper training in a timely manner.
Work with the Activity Trip Coordinator to ensure safe planning of trips and timely invoicing for services.
Assists in surveying bus stops on routes for safety and efficiency.
Excellent communication with other District departments and employees.
Oversees the Mechanics and maintenance shop including the budget and purchasing.
Oversees the annual parts inventory and disposal of assets.
Responsible for all regular bus drivers and shop employee timesheets.
Responds to the Bus Conduct Reports on a daily basis within 24 hours by emailing the Site Administrator and scanning the reports. Follows up with Site Administrator about any disciplinary actions needed.
May substitute for bus drivers or assistants as needed. Must be able to drive any size bus and must maintain current CDL.
Must obtain a School Bus Driver Instructor certificate from the New Mexico State public education Department Transportation department as soon as eligible.
Oversees the timely training of new employees and manages the District’s SBDIs.
May assist with training of Passenger Management.
May prepare transportation costs, quotes and invoices.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Range: $63,600 to $78,000
Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to): Map information system for bus routes ( distance measuring instrument), GPS system. Standard office equipment including: computers, keyboards, and relevant software programs. Vehicle to assess road conditions, attend meetings, and be present at emergencies. Buses and other vehicles.
Physical/Cognitive Requirements: Regularly required to stand; move throughout offices, bus yard and mechanics’ shop; communicate verbally and electronically; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, and balance, and drive. Regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 50 pounds, occasionally required to lift or exert force of up to 75 pounds. Vision abilities required including close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Environmental Conditions: Work is performed in typical office environment with additional duties in the transportation maintenance shop and on transportation vehicles.

Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
