The selected candidate will be responsible for developing comprehensive MILCON documentation and construction cost estimates. Additionally, the selected candidate will provide technical peer reviews of design submittals, will develop Facilities Evaluation Testing Criteria, and will perform construction monitoring and conduct/prepare engineering reports and will make recommendations to solve Facilities issues.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of a structural engineer involve a wide range of tasks related to the design, analysis, and evaluation of structures. Here is an overview of the key responsibilities:
- Structural Design Reviews: One of the primary responsibilities is to review designs to ensure that they are safe, structurally sound, and meet the project requirements. Analyze architectural plans, understand the project's purpose and function, and verify appropriate structural systems and components. This involves verification of selection of suitable materials, calculated loads and forces, and verification of structural elements such as beams, columns, foundations, and slabs.
- Structural Analysis: Perform detailed analyses to assess the behavior and response of structures under various loading conditions. Use computer software and mathematical models to simulate and predict the performance of structures, ensuring they can withstand anticipated loads, such as gravity, wind, seismic forces, and temperature changes. The analysis helps determine the internal forces and deformations within the structure, verifying the design process and ensuring its safety.
- Building Codes and Regulations: Candidate is responsible for staying updated on building codes, regulations, and standards relevant to structural design. They must ensure that their designs comply with local, national, and international codes and regulations governing structural safety, accessibility, fire protection, and other applicable requirements.
- Collaboration and Coordination: Candidate is responsible for collaboration with architects, other engineers, and construction professionals to verify integrated structural design are provided for the projects. They will coordinate with other engineering disciplines, such as civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers, to ensure compatibility and coordination between different systems within the project.
- Construction Support: During the construction phase, structural engineers provide support and guidance as needed to ensure that the structure is built according to the design and specifications. They may review construction documents, respond to contractor inquiries, and assist with resolving any structural-related issues that arise during construction. They may also visit the construction site to verify compliance with the design.
- Structural Evaluation and Rehabilitation: Structural engineers are involved in evaluating the condition and safety of existing structures.
- Documentation and Reporting: Structural engineer will review documentation such as design calculations, analysis reports, and other project-related documents.
- Building Structural Engineer: Building structural engineers specialize in the design and analysis of structures such as residential buildings, commercial complexes, industrial facilities, and institutional buildings. They ensure that the structures are safe, stable, and meet all the necessary design requirements.
- The selected candidate will be responsible for assisting with the development of comprehensive Military Construction (MILCON) documentation and construction cost estimates. Additionally, the selected candidate will provide technical peer reviews of design submittals, will develop Facilities Evaluation Testing Criteria, and will perform construction monitoring and conduct/prepare engineering reports and will make recommendations to solve Facilities issues.
About the program
Our organization has supported the U.S. Navy’s Strategic Systems Program (SSP) continually since the program’s inception in the 1950s. SSP developed the first sea-based, underwater-launched Strategic Weapon System (SWS), a defense system that is truly critical to our national security. For more than six decades, SSP has maintained and upgraded this weapon system and we have been there every step of the way. The sea-based SWS is the ultimate stealthy weapon system and as the first leg of the U.S. nuclear triad. With over 70% of our nation’s nuclear arsenal its importance to maintaining world peace cannot be overstated. The development of Columbia, the most advanced nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed submarine ever designed, as well the next D5LE2 weapon system is under way and will begin to be rolled out over the next decade. The Navy projects this system to be operational through 2084, meaning the program will have a total life span of more than 120 years. This is a truly unique program and BAE Systems employees on this program understand they are part of an important legacy.
