Job Summary:
To oversee district security personnel and the district’s emergency response and crisis management protocols; to enforce truancy and disciplinary policies; and to provide for the welfare and safety of Mesa Public Schools students, employees and visitors

Hire, assess, and oversee the performance of assigned staff members

Respond to emergencies

Determine and implement recommendations to ensure the department functions in a safe and efficient manner

Assist school crisis management teams in the implementation of a unique crisis management plan by providing information on procedures and protocols to parents, students, and staff

Arrange assessment, training, practice drills, and apply evaluation results to school and district-level program improvements

Either arrange for or provide instruction in NIMS (National Incident Management System) courses of 100, 200, 700 & 800 to designated school personnel

Prepare documentation (i.e., correspondence, memos, schedules, reports, etc.) to provide written support and/or to convey information

Recommend policies, procedures, and/or actions as related to security for Mesa Public Schools

Supervise department functions, including the hiring and terminating of personnel

Communicate school policies and enforce procedures to students, district personnel, visitors, and the public

Support the Director of School Safety and Attendance by assisting with the job functions of planning and implementing the District’s overall security program

Understand, operate, and instruct regarding the use of the Security Camera Systems
-
Collaborate with department and school leaders, supervisors, and staff to align processes and procedures while actively seeking their input and lead or participate in joint committees and working groups

Focus on continuous improvement by analyzing data, assessing systems and timelines, and recommending adjustments to enhance procedures and strategies, providing root cause analysis and suggestions to the administration

Identify opportunities to optimize the use of various information systems and liaise with system representatives to stay informed on updates and explore potential improvements

Work with administration and staff to identify ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness in assigned areas and related departmental functions

Develop and execute both short- and long-term goals for assigned responsibilities

Stay informed on federal and state laws and best practices relevant to the assigned area through ongoing research

Manage special projects and perform additional tasks related to areas of responsibility as assigned by administration

Assist with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
Required Qualifications:
To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications. Verification of these required qualifications is necessary.
Education:
- Community college and/or Bachelor’s degree with job related studies preferred
Experience:
- Prior leadership experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field
- Experience as a police officer, security guard, military personnel, or in school resource officer (SRO) roles

- Works across multiple schools within the district, including elementary, middle, and high schools
- Patrols school buildings, hallways, parking lots, and outdoor spaces

- Works closely with administrators, teachers, school resource officers (SROs), and local police
- May work early mornings, evenings, or weekends, depending on school events, emergencies, or special situations
- Must be able to patrol school grounds and respond quickly to incidents.
- May need to carry equipment, barricades, or assist in medical emergencies, up to 50 pounds
