Job Title: Mechanical Technician (NWS 00821)

North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Available employment opportunities may range from administrative and logistical support to advanced technical positions.

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.

The Materials Engineering Division (MED) has an opening for a Mechanical Technician to support ongoing programmatic activities. The successful candidate will provide basic technical support while applying fundamental knowledge of fabrication, assembly, installation, operation of system technologies utilizing common well understood methods. The successful candidate will interact with supervision and coworkers and report daily to the supervisor or lead technician. Under supervisor or lead technician oversight, the successful candidate will provide technical support which may include but are not limited to equipment set up and operation; general troubleshooting and maintenance; minor modification of basic hardware, software, and/or systems; data collection, rudimentary analysis, and reporting results. Some overtime and occasional travel may be required to meet program goals.

Essential Duties
- Provide basic technical support applying basic knowledge to staff working under close supervision.
- Participate in general on-the-job training mechanical operations and equipment training.
- Apply basic knowledge of mechanical equipment operations and maintenance.
- Perform basic mechanical equipment and system testing.
- Collect data using fundamental knowledge mechanical testing methods.
- Follow written/verbal operational and safety procedures.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and functional laboratory environment.
- Perform all assignments per ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
- Associate degree in engineering, mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience; or a technology related certificate or diploma with related work experience and related course work; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field that includes mechanical training.
- Ability to participate in general on-the-job training, such as operational or equipment training.
- Basic understanding of mechanical fabrication technologies and processes.
- Basic skills using hand and power tools.
- Ability to work in a team environment to solve challenges.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical documentation.
- Experience with personal computers and software (Microsoft Office) with effective written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Familiar with hardware fabrication/repair processes and equipment maintenance.
- Experience operating machine tools (drill press, band saw, mill and lathe operation).
- Familiar with reading and interpreting mechanical drawings.

Special Requirements
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job-related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
Pre-employment drug test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post offer, pre-employment drug test.
Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
