Are you a numbers person that is curious about working in the insurance industry? Farmers Mutual Hail (located in West Des Moines) is currently looking for an undergraduate to be our Reinsurance Intern for our 2026 Summer Internship Program. This is a paid internship starting Monday, May 18 through Friday, August 7, working up to 40 hours per week for the summer, with the potential to turn into a full-time, permanent position in the future. The intern will work within the reinsurance department to learn what it takes to be successful in underwriting, pricing and supporting a reinsurance portfolio. We are looking for currently enrolled college students who are close to the West Des Moines area, as this is not a remote internship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: 

• Completes a rate study by analyzing and evaluating a company. Presents the analysis to the company.
• Learns and assists in the Underwriting process for direct and broker accounts.
• Work with financials and annual statements.
• Communicates with clients.
• Assists with ongoing team projects.
• Works on other projects as delegated by manager/mentor.
• Participates in internal meetings to share and develop strategy and knowledge.
• Attends a broker visit.
• Accomplishes other tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Must be enrolled as a junior or senior at an undergraduate college or university, majoring in Risk Management, Business, Accounting, Finance, or related field is preferred. (May 2026 graduates will not be eligible).  
• Written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office products: Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
• Analytical, problem solving, and attention to detail skills are highly desired.
