In this role, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of duties related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of highways, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure. You will work in a team environment to operate light and heavy equipment. Work alongside other full-time employees with duties ranging from sign replacement, herbicide application operators, roadway level-ups, edge repair, tree trimming, litter pick-up/patrol, project inspection (Construction-Maintenance) and much more as well as assisting with various construction and maintenance projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, the ability to work well in a team environment, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills. Annual Salary Ranges

General Transportation Tech I (A16): $40,918- $61,130

General Transportation Tech II (A17): $42,976- $64,469

General Transportation Tech III (A18): $45,521- $71,055

This position is for some General Transportation Techs I, II or III, depending on business needs and applicant qualifications. TxDOT reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors.

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

General Transportation Tech I

•    Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
•    Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
•    Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
•    Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
•    Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
•    Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
•    Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
•    Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
•    Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
•    Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
•    Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
•    Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during
•    emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
•    Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
•    Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II

In addition to the duties listed above

•    Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
•    Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
•    Maintains construction project records and bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
•    Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
•    Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
•    Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
•    Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
•    Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
•    Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
•    Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
•    Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.

General Transportation Tech III

In addition to the duties listed above

•    May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
•    Trains other employees.
•    Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; and provides assistance to stranded motorists.
•    Verifies and processes maintenance contract inspection data to build work orders and request payment funding.
•    Works on a survey crew; operates survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
•    Performing Follow Up Action Work (Internal-Concrete Crew) on Bridges

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

Experience:  GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*; GTT III = 2 years experience*

*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.  (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent).  Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

GTT I/II must have obtained a CDL "A” License with an "N" Endorsement, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
GTT III Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement at time of application
