Job Title: Supervisor, Central Parks
Salary: $96,876 - $113,334 (2025)
Reports To: Manager, Parks and Recreation
Department: Community Services
Location: Lindsay, ON
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week with core working hours between 7 am and 5 pm
Other: Combination of general office environment and occasional off-site travel. Attend meetings, conferences and departmental emergency situations, which may be outside of normal business hours.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for the implementation and oversight of specific programs and processes in order to achieve corporate and departmental strategic objectives. Key responsibilities of the position include providing leadership in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of municipal parks and recreational amenities – including playgrounds, sports fields, sport courts, green spaces, and public boating facilities – ensuring they are safe, well maintained, and aligned with City standards within the assigned geographic area.
Essential Duties
Specific to this role:
Provide leadership and supervision to operations staff responsible for the maintenance and repair of parks, open spaces, playgrounds, and sports fields within the assigned area
Ensure all facilities, parks, and recreational properties are operated safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established schedules and bookings
Assess turf conditions, identify maintenance and renovation needs, and recommend appropriate regimes for turf care, irrigation, and long-term sustainability
Oversee the repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of irrigation systems and equipment
Schedule and supervise both preventative and emergency maintenance of machinery and equipment, coordinating with Fleet Services and external contractors as required
Conduct site inspections, review site plans, and provide recommendations to support infrastructure improvements and long-term parkland planning
Administer minor revenue collection and reporting related to designated park programming
As a member of the leadership team:
Demonstrate leadership and coordination in assigning work activities as required, ensuring equipment and resources are sufficient to enable successful completion of assignments
Support, advise, supervise team members, providing feedback and/or improvement opportunities as needed
Research, quantify, facilitate, and coordinate delivery of training needs to staff
Monitor the contracted resources
Manage customer service concerns, investigating, problem solving, and responding as appropriate with solutions
Regularly develop improved methods, procedures, and techniques relating to programs that achieve effective and efficient operations
Procure services and goods related to areas of responsibility
Authorize time off requests, time worked and overtime costs
Manage stakeholder interactions in the supply and receipt of information, including the analysis and resolution of issues
Provide data to allow program reporting, decision making, and evaluation
Complete continuous research, analysis of industry trends, and best practices to remain knowledgeable and current in program area of responsibility
Contribute to the development of annual program needs
Create and maintain a cohesive team environment to support staff to achieve objectives and program outcomes
Responsible for the hiring, onboarding, performance management and supervision of staff in a unionized environment, in consultation with People Services
Administer the terms of the applicable Collective Agreements, corporate policies, directives, expectations, in collaboration with People Services; act as a Supervisor under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Post-secondary degree in Arboriculture, Horticulture, Turf Management, or a related field
Minimum five (5) years of related progressive experience, preferably in a municipal environment, along with supervisory experience in a unionized environment
Demonstrated experience in horticulture, landscape, and turf maintenance
Parks Practitioner Certificate (PPC), or willingness to obtain
Strong knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Playground Standards
In-depth understanding of parks operations, maintenance practices, equipment, risk management, and planning within a public or recreational setting
Ability to interpret and apply blueprints, surveys, and site plans
Demonstrated leadership and management skills at a level to ensure successful program and employee performance outcomes and management
Demonstrated knowledge and application of financial budget and business planning processes
Possess and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and personal attributes as described in the key performance competencies outlined below
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of applications, audio/video conferencing, the internet, and any other related software
Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence and acceptable driving record
