T-Rex Solutions is seeking a Database Engineer to support database design, development, and maintenance for large-scale data processing systems in support of our US Census Bureau customer as we begin development on the 2030 Decennial Census. This role will work with cloud-native applications processing high-volume datasets and support database operations for statistical and administrative data systems.

This role offers excellent growth opportunities in a challenging technical environment supporting critical government statistical operations. The position provides exposure to modern cloud-native data architectures and large-scale data processing systems. Work will be performed on-site at least 2 days per week at the Census Bureau facilities in Suitland, MD with the remainder being remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain database schemas and data structures for PostgreSQL, Redshift, and Vector databases
  • Support data pipeline development and ETL processes for high-volume data ingestion
  • Implement and maintain data quality checks and validation processes
  • Assist with database performance optimization and query tuning
  • Support data storage solutions using Amazon S3, Iceberg, and other cloud storage technologies
  • Collaborate with development teams on database integration for applications
  • Participate in database monitoring, backup, and recovery procedures
  • Document database designs, procedures, and data lineage

Technical Environment

  • Databases: PostgreSQL, Amazon Redshift, Vector DB, NoSQL
  • Cloud Platforms: AWS (S3, Glue, Athena, Kinesis, QuickSight)
  • Programming: Python, SQL
  • Tools: Git/GitLab, Jenkins, Maven, Docker, Terraform
  • Data Formats: Iceberg, various data storage formats

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
  • 1-3 years of experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of SQL query development and optimization
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
  • Understanding of data modeling concepts and database design principles
  • Experience with version control systems (Git)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be a U.S. citizen eligible for government background investigation

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Amazon Redshift, Vector databases, or NoSQL systems
  • Knowledge of data warehousing and ETL concepts
  • Familiarity with Python or other programming languages for data processing
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (S3, Glue, Athena, Kinesis, QuickSight)
  • Understanding of data quality frameworks and testing methodologies
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with containerization (Docker) and infrastructure as code (Terraform)

T-Rex considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.
