Purpose:

This clinical clerkship offers pre-professional students a hands-on opportunity to gain clinical and administrative experience in a dynamic healthcare setting. Minimal previous experience or certification such as CMA, CNA, or EMT is preferred. Patient Care Clerkship will support departmental operations, assist with patient care tasks (as appropriate to training), and participate in educational activities designed to enhance their understanding of medical practice management.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

   Clinical Support (as training allows)

  • Assist with patient intake and ambulation
  • Stock exam rooms and prep for procedures
  • Maintain sample room inventory and coordinate vendor resupply
  • Support failsafe processes and prioritize diagnostic imaging tasks
  • Address gaps in care and coding for Medicare patients
  • Contact patients for follow-up labs or diagnostics (e.g., A1c, mammograms)
  • Fax and scan medical records, sort provider faxes, and manage documentation workflows

   Administrative & Operational Tasks

  • Data entry and general filing
  • Assist with department-specific projects
  • Participating in regular staff meetings
  • Shadow providers and clinic staff in order to observe medical office operations
  • Attend Friday educational sessions (summer interns)
  • Complete an educational project if required by academic program

Other Duties:

  • As assigned by department manager

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of at least two years of undergraduate education
  • Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with excellent follow-up and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to shifting priorities

**Time Expectations: 3-month commitment for the summer or Fall or Spring Semesters. Flexible part-time or full-time.

Preferred: 

  • Prior patient care experience
  • CMA, CNA, or EMT training certificate
  • Interest in pursuing a career in healthcare administration or clinical care
