Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years accounting or business from a college or university preferred.
- Three to five years of work experience in a related area of accounting and purchasing.
Nature of Work:
The Payroll Technician is to assist in the administration of the district’s business affairs so as to provide the maximum services for the financial resources available.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and punctuation
- Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures
- Considerable knowledge of bookkeeping
- Considerable knowledge of accounting techniques and procedures

Essential Job Functions:
- Collects and processes the information necessary to pay all employees.
- Edits payroll by reviewing data submitted from schools regarding hours and days worked as well as absences.
- Understands policies, rules and regulations and laws governing State of North Carolina school payroll.
- Processes and prints checks for payroll.
- Maintains the filing of all monthly payroll timesheets and other payroll data.
- Assists with the upgrading and maintaining salary tables.
- Assists with the set up of the calendars for each payroll run in the Sartox software program which controls the processing of payroll.
- Performs clerical duties as required.
- Reviews and ensures accuracy of longevity payment.
- Edits longevity reports.
- Maintains longevity files.
- Ensures that employees are enrolled in health insurance and deleted off if the employee has resigned.
- Balances the health insurance bill.
- Maintains current address on all employees listed on the insurance bill.
- Processes payment for contract work performed by employees.
- Maintains contract book for payroll and distributes copies of contracts for sponsoring administrators.
- Verifies salary and supplement payments by running reports to determine information for loan approval on active employees and former employees.
- Verifies leave balances, years of North Carolina State aggregate service and salary information on all employees transferring to another unit.
- Ensures timely remittance of all applicable withholding liabilities including federal, FICA and state taxes and retirement contributions.
- Compiles unemployment reports and worker’s compensation audit reports.
- Processes tax levies, child support orders and garnishments.
- Reconciles annual reports for W-2 processing and review W-2s for accuracy.
- Reconciles audit exceptions and allotment reports for certified salary positions.
- Administers and manages employee benefits and retirement program (health insurance, dental, vision and 401 (k) plans
- Maintaining accurate benefit records, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and develop communication materials
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
