What's the role?

Join NewsCorp Australia's innovative AI/ML team as a Lead AI/ML Engineer on a 12 month contract and drive technical excellence across our cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning initiatives. This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned AI/ML professional to mentor a diverse team, build upon established best practices, and shape the technical direction of projects that directly impact millions of readers across Australia.

You'll be working with the latest Google Cloud technologies, providing technical leadership across diverse AI/ML domains including generative AI, predictive analytics, and intelligent automation systems, whilst serving as the key technical liaison between our AI/ML team and business stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Architect and implement scalable AI/ML frameworks and standards

  • Establish coding, model development, and deployment best practices

  • Contribute to technical roadmaps and evaluate new AI/ML technologies

  • Lead code reviews to ensure high-quality deliverables

Team Development & Mentorship

  • Mentor team members from graduate to senior levels

  • Conduct workshops, code reviews, and share best practices

  • Support career growth and solve complex technical challenges
     

Business Partnership

  • Act as technical liaison for editorial, marketing, product, and tech teams

  • Translate AI/ML concepts into clear business insights

  • Identify AI/ML opportunities and design solutions aligned with business needs
     

Project & Risk Management

  • Identify risks and improve development processes for efficiency

  • Ensure robust testing, validation, monitoring, and documentation

Innovation & Efficiency

  • Drive process optimisation and automation in AI/ML workflows

  • Evaluate new tools and establish performance monitoring metrics

Who are you?

Essential Requirements

6+ years in AI/ML engineering or related fields

  • Advanced Python skills and experience with ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn)

  • Proven experience in diverse AI/ML domains including generative AI, NLP, predictive analytics, recommendation systems, anomaly detection, and multimodal AI

  • History of mentoring and leading technical initiatives

  • Extensive Google Cloud Platform expertise

  • Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences

  • Excellent problem-solving and process optimisation skills
     

Highly Regarded

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Statistics, or related fields

  • Media/publishing industry experience

  • MLOps/DevOps skills (CI/CD, containerisation, automated deployment)

  • Data engineering (ETL, large-scale processing)

  • UI/UX development for technical dashboards

  • Open source contributions and conference speaking experience

  • Cross-industry AI/ML exposure

Technology Stack

  • Cloud: Google Cloud (BigQuery, Vertex AI, Cloud Functions, Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Storage)

  • ML Frameworks: TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, OpenAI APIs

  • Development: Python, Git, Docker, CI/CD pipelines

  • Data Processing: Apache Beam, Pandas, NumPy, Spark

  • Monitoring: Prometheus, Grafana, Cloud Monitoring

  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Cloud Deployment Manager
