The Group Governance Services team drives effective governance and ensures compliance with individual accountability regimes across every jurisdiction where the firm operates. We actively align governance and accountability practices with the firm’s strategy, priorities, and values while meeting regulatory requirements and strengthening leadership accountability.
Purpose of Role
To provide a central support and advisory function in relation to the FCA’s Senior Manager and Certification Regime (SMCR) and other global individual accountability regulatory regimes and registrations across the Baillie Gifford Group. Proactively engage with colleagues, regulators and our internal client base across the globe in order to contribute to the firm’s ongoing compliance with the SMCR and maintenance of an effective regulatory framework.Responsibilities
As part of the Global Regulatory Registrations team within Group Governance Services, this role is key to Baillie Gifford’s compliance with the FCA’s SMCR and other global regulatory requirements. In this role you will:
- Analyse and interpret the requirements of the FCA’s SMCR and other global individual accountability and regulatory requirements as they apply to the Baillie Gifford Group.
- Support the firm’s Senior Manager population under the SMCR, promoting efficient and client-focussed processes, acting as a trusted adviser and providing expert advice to stakeholders across the firm.
- Lead on the preparation and submission of SMCR applications/notifications and other global regulatory filings, working closely with colleagues across Baillie Gifford.
- Analyse the regulatory impact of change events across the Baillie Gifford Group and ensure relevant filings and submissions are made in compliance with the firm’s global regulatory requirements.
- Evaluate regulatory developments, translate them into business impacts, implement related policy and process changes and provide advice to stakeholders as required.
- Maintain and oversee SMCR records, including responsibilities maps, statements of responsibilities, and certification processes.
- Support and work collaboratively with the Human Resources department on the Fitness and Propriety assessments and processes for the firm’s SMCR populations.
- Contribute to governance projects that improve processes, controls, and risk mitigation across the Group Governance Services team.
- Explore and embrace opportunities to apply new technologies and AI tools to help streamline and ensure efficiencies in regulatory monitoring, filings, and governance processes.
- Provide training and support to colleagues as required.
Qualifications:
- No specific qualifications are required for this role however, prior, up-to-date, practitioner working knowledge and experience of the FCA's Senior Manager and Certification Regime is essential.
- Experience of other global regulatory accountability regimes or individual registrations would be desirable.
Your knowledge and experience:
- A sound knowledge and extensive practical experience of the FCA's Senior Manager and Certification Regime is required.
- Proactive and thoughtful approach
- Ability to distil complex regulations and apply them in a practical and efficient way.
- Ability to work collaboratively with team members to deliver a smooth and efficient service to our internal customers and stakeholders.
- Ability to engage with regulated individuals and key stakeholders across the firm to provide appropriate regulatory support and guidance.

The right candidate will bring strong analytical thinking and experience in analysing regulation and turning it into clear, practical advice. They will also have a experience of managing regulatory filings and documentation with accuracy and attention to detail. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are important, along with the confidence to engage senior stakeholders. An interest in using data, technology, and emerging tools such as AI to improve regulatory processes and insight would also be highly valued.
